Diagnosis and Treatment

How is Celiac Disease Diagnosed?

Milk

There may be many clinical signs indicating Celiac Disease. Screening can be done by a panel of blood tests. Ask your doctor for more information about these tests.  Definitive diagnoses of Celiac Disease can only be made by a small bowel biopsy (jejunal biopsy). This biopsy must be done before you start a gluten free diet.

Treatment

The treatment of Celiac Disease is a strict adherence to a gluten-free diet for life. Once on a gluten-free diet your small intestine returns to health and begins absorption of nutrients.  Celiacs must learn to read all labels and be alert to hidden sources of gluten in foods and medications. With help and support, treatment for Celiac Disease can be controlled.
