What is Celiac Disease?

Food1
Celiac Disease is a disorder that can be inherited and may become active at any time from infancy to adulthood. It is also known by different names such as Celiac Sprue, Gluten Sensitivity Enteropathy and Non-tropical Sprue. They all refer to the same problem, the inability to tolerate gluten, a grain protein found in wheat, rye, barley and oats. By consuming these grains, the mucosa of the small intestinal lining is damaged. The major function of the small intestine is the absorption of nutrients. The damage therefore, results in mal-absorption and an increased risk of other health problems. Celiac Disease is controlled with removal of gluten from your entire diet-for life!
