and 69% in poor condition.

To find out more please see the attached documented of the summary report on the state of Wiltshire's orchards produced on behalf of the Peoples Trust For Endangered Species for WTOP.

Many thanks for all your support and interest.

Its hard graft!

posted 18 Mar 2011 06:51 by orchardwilts orchardwilts   [ updated 18 Mar 2011 07:08 ]

It can be quite challenging work for the muscles in your hands but you can create your own fruit tree from learning the skill.

WTOP are running a grafting workshop on Sunday the 3rd of April 11:00am till 2:00pm at Wiltshire Wildlife Trust Lower Moor Farm in North Wiltshire, located near Oaksey and the Cotswold Water Park.
WTOP purchased a whole range of apple rootstocks for you to come and have a go at grafting your own tree.

Yes, it’s on Mothers Day, but what a lovely gift you could give to your mother or a nice day out for you and your mother to spend together.

All tools and equipment will be provide just bring a few fruit tree samples from your own apple tree. Make sure you bring a few different sizes so that you can make sure you have the right size for the right rootstock.
It cost £5 to graft a tree which will go towards funding planting and conservation of traditional fruit trees.

Please let Neil Pullen or Sue Sawyer know if you will be able to attend the day and if you need any more information please don’t hesitate to ask Neil or Sue.

WTOP funding has ended!

posted 18 Mar 2011 06:34 by orchardwilts orchardwilts

The Wiltshire Traditional Orchard Project (WTOP) received its last grant from the National Trust in February 2011.

WTOP are now in the process of analysing the results of the completed surveys by volunteers, with the help of the Peoples Trust for Endanger Species. WTOP are hoping to release the last news later in April and are in the process of looking for new avenues of funding to develop the project further. The project has been entirely volunteer lead and WTOP are very grateful to everyone that has support the project.

WTOP will continue to keep the website updated as and when new exciting or interesting orchard information or events become available.

If you have an enquiry about orchards please contact Wiltshire Wildlife Trust directly on 01380 725670, as the availability by WTOP volunteers to answer email enquires through the WTOP email account is at present very limited due to financial resources and the availability of volunteer time. A new Local Food Champion’s project is being developed at Wiltshire Wildlife Trust and has a large orchard component focusing on establishing and developing Wiltshire’s community orchards.

If you know of a community or are part of a community orchard and would like to sign up to receive support through this three year project please contact Kate Robinson at Wiltshire Wildlife Trust 01380 725670.

WTOP hope that the Local Food Champions project will be able to build upon what WTOP have achieved and inspire others and their local communities to get involved with planting or caring for orchards.

Tree planting event cancelled.

posted 3 Dec 2010 08:10 by orchardwilts orchardwilts   [ updated 3 Dec 2010 08:45 ]

As we all know the weather is pretty bad and this has prevented the trees from being dug up from their nursery, but also the ground at Sandpool is frozen solid, which means we would not be able to get them into the ground. Therefore the event on Satarday the 5th of December has had to be cancelled.

My apologies for this cancellation. The tree planting event is now expected to be on Sunday February 6th 2011. please keep checking back for more details in the New year.

Many thanks
