Yi (William) Wei

I live in Newton, Massachusetts of the United States with my wife and two sons. I was born and grew up in China and came to US more than 20 years ago. I worked at the Institute for Quantitative Social Science (IQSS) of Harvard University as senior adviser to the director. I was responsible for providing critical information to help inform the overall strategy, operations and efficiency of IQSS.  My responsibilities also included collecting and analyzing key data, managing discrete projects, and offering direct strategic and programmatic assistance to the Director.

My previous positions include Chief Technology Officer of IQSS and Executive Director of Harvard-MIT Data Center (HMDC), in which I oversaw operations of IQSS IT and HMDC and worked with the IQSS and HMDC directors and associate director to develop long-term strategic plans and to establish operational policies. My responsibilities also included finance and personnel management (budgeting, hiring, coaching, retaining, team building, performance reviewing, etc.). I also developed partnership with other Harvard and MIT IT support groups, service providers, and outside contractors, to build best research, learning, and administrative support for the social science communities.

I came to Harvard in May, 1995, from the Data Coordinating Center of School of Public Health, Boston University, where I was a Senior Research Analyst and System Administrator. Before BU, I was a post-doctoral fellow at MIT after earning a Ph.D. in Marine Studies from University of Delaware

In addition to enjoying working with excellent colleagues, faculty, and students at Harvard, and being part of a great research and teaching institution, I am a father of two sons whom my wife and I are raising and learning from.
