Numeric locks have recently become available for a very reasonable cost from Schlage, Kwikset and Baldwin.  I replaced the deadbolt on the door to my side alley with one of these and it is works perfectly.  No more looking for the key when it's time to take out the trash, and the kids can come and go as they please without worrying about losing the key.  Now I'm working on convincing my dear significant other to replace all the locks in the house with numeric locks.  It's really easy to program the locks with the same code, to change the code, or to add a temporary code for guests and servants.  You can give the butler, scullery maid and chimney sweep different codes so that thay can only access their appropriate areas of the house.

Here's a picture of the Schlage deadbolt.  Different finishes are available, and you can also get passage sets and full-on entryway locksets.

Imagine how jealous your friends and neighbors will be when they see your fantastic new KEYPAD LOCKS!  "Oh, you still use housekeys, how quaint!  How do you manage to keep track of them all?"

How much for this fantastic new technology?  Well, replacing an existing deadbolt will cost you $250 for the Schlage unit, installed by me personally.  If you have more than one deadbolt, then the price drops to $200 per unit.
