William Allen School in Rochester held a Heritage Fair recently for all of its fifth graders. Students spent weeks learning about different cultures before the fair where they enjoyed foods inspired by other countries. Parents and volunteers helped out in the endeavor as did members of Rochester Historical Society. Enjoying some of the displays during the fair were Jennifer Jordan, mother of Maiya Jordan, Hannah Gemas and Charles Seppala.

Mrs. Jean, Mrs. Prewitt, Mrs. Walter and the fifth graders have been working hard on their heritage projects for the Heritage Fair. Students made shields marking out their heritage to family trees. They also brought many food items ranging from kielbasa from Poland to strawberry rolls from Norway along with many foods from Greece, Spain, France and Canada. Mrs. Pham did a presentation on her heritage, Vietnam and China. She did a slide show about Vietnam and its country and talked about Chinese New Year and its celebration. She also brought in a child sized dragon puppet commonly used for the Dragon Dance for students to try on along with holiday costumes and Chinese fortune sticks. Mr. Miller from the Rochester Historical Society did a slide show presentation about Rochester and gave some interesting facts. Thank you to the many parents who brought in food items and who attended this year's Heritage Fair.

Thank you to Mrs. Kristin Sturtevant for doing the after school science. The students had a blast making slime, learned about flight with paper airplanes and chemical reactions with Mentos and sodas.

There will not be a PTA meeting for November.

The fourth grade at William Allen has been very busy with NECAP testing for the past two weeks. Students have given this test their very best effort. Way to go! In addition to the NECAP, they have almost finished their first reading unit — Risks and Consequences. They are looking forward to their next unit: Nature's Delicate Balance, where they will experience lots of nonfiction reading. Many fourth grade students have been hard at work writing personal narratives during writing workshop. They look forward to publishing these true stories!

In math, they have finished a review of addition and subtraction of multidigit numbers. Next up will be multiplication! The fourth-graders have also learned many fun math games to help solidify these skills. They are focusing on predator vs. prey in science, as well as food webs and chains. In social studies, students have been enjoying their practice for the Geography Bee! It's not too late to sign up for the Geography Bee! Sign up to receive a study packet!

As fourth-graders, many students are taking part in band and/or chorus for the first time. It has been exciting for them to discover a musical side to their week!

William Allen School's annual Vocabulary Parade will take place on Oct. 28 at 1:20 p.m. Can't wait to see how students will portray their vocabulary words this year!

Don't forget Picture Day on October 22.

Students from William Allen School in Rochester learned about fire safety recently. Here, third grader Bobby Townsend finishes off his part in a fire safety obstacle course by suiting up in firefighter gear. Science technology itinerant Pam Gelinas kept things running smoothly and most importantly, safely.

Third grade students have finished the reading portion of the NECAP test and are working on the math portion this week (through Oct. 14). We have also been learning about Jackie Robinson and read his biography Teammates. Everyone did a fantastic job coming up with synonyms for our Word Duel. We now have 44 usable synonyms for the word "good." We are well on our way practicing for the spring geography bee. We have been working on our map skills daily. Next week we will be starting to write our own personal narratives.

The PTA has organized an event at the district level where all schools will compete to collect nonperishable food items to donate to either Gerry's Food Pantry or the Salvation Army. The details will be sent home in a PTA Newsletter. There will be a collection area in the front foyer for students to drop off donations. Please help us in supporting this great cause.

There will be an early release on Wednesday, Oct. 20 at 1:15 p.m. for all grades including kindergarten. Picture retakes will be Friday Oct. 22.

Second graders are off to a great start! They are currently learning kindness. One of the things that they have talked about was how they can take care of our earth and point out some of the things you may currently do for the environment. In math, they are learning counting money and coin combinations and simple math facts to 10.

Thank you to Kristin Sturtevant for donating her time to do the afterschool science program. The kids are having a wonderful time learning about chemical reactions, flight with paper airplanes and this week — slime!

With the exception of Mrs. Gadway's class and Ms. Parker's class, picture day was canceled due to rain. It is rescheduled for Friday, Oct. 22. All order forms have been collected and locked up for safe keeping. Mrs. Gadway's and Ms. Parker's classes were able to get their pictures done before the rain came down. Please contact Gwen Pham if you have questions or need a form back.

Our school store started up Oct. 5. It will run throughout the school year on Tuesdays from 8-8:25 a.m. All items under $1 each! Thank you Jen Hudgins for spearheading this.

NECAP testing (New England Common Assessment Program) for all students in grades 3-5 is the weeks of Oct. 4-18. Please help your child by ensuring that he/she gets a good night's sleep and eats a healthy breakfast. Breakfast is free everyday of the school year for all students at William Allen School. Please also make sure that students are present and on time for all testing sessions to minimize distractions that could impact the results of the test. In the event that your child will be absent for one or more testing sessions, please contact the classroom teacher ASAP so that alternative arrangements can be made. Lastly, encourage your child to follow directions and to ask questions if something is not clear to them.

A big Welcome to Mr. Betz! The former fifth grade teacher is now teaching first grade at William Allen School!

The first graders are busily back to work at William Allen School. The beginning of the year brought on Teach To's about the rules and procedures of our classes and the school. They are excited for the start of Fall — it was voted the favorite season in Mrs. Marcotte's class.

They have been having fun playing math games — including Bunny Hop, Monster Squeeze, Top It, and Penny Dice. They have wrapped up their first math unit and will be moving on to unit 2.

All first grade students started Walk to Read today. Many got to travel to new classes with new students. Mr. Betz, Mrs. Melcher, and Mrs. Marcotte are enjoying their new classes. It's going to be a great year!

Don't forget to come and check out Open House on Oct. 5, from 6-7 p.m. There is a PTA meeting immediately following at 7 p.m. Hope to see you all there.

Our kindergarten friends have been learning the expectations of school. They have been focusing on the way we treat each other. They have been talking about the Golden Rule of treating others the way you want them to treat you, in other words respect. They've learned how to use kind words when talking to people. Parents can help by talking about these things at home.

Ms. Parker's class has been singing songs to learn counting forward and backward. They have also begun to learn about patterns and how to sort a group of items. In Mrs. Hoffmann's class, the kiddos played a simple board game in which they have to roll the dice, count the dots and move the marker the correct number of spaces. Sounds easy, but it's a little tricky unless you concentrate! Mrs. Croteau's class has been practicing routines and procedures as well, and making lots of new friends. Also, the students love using the interactive Smartboard. Please continue to check your child's folder each day and remove any mail. The Kindergarten Team is looking forward to a great year!

PTA Fall Fundraiser will start Sept. 24. Please support this fundraiser as the proceeds will benefit classroom fieldtrips and many more things for our students and school.

More dates to remember: fall portraits will be Thursday, Sept. 30; Open House is Tuesday, Oct. 5, from 6:30-7:30 p.m.; PTA meeting is Tuesday, Oct. 5, right after Open House at 7:30 p.m.
