Decoys

Come browse the quaint shop of Jay Cherrix, grandson of Chincoteague’s favorite son – Ira Hudson.  Affordable and tasteful, Jay offers everything from primitive, working decoys to very refined pieces.  The smell of cedar and pine alone is well worth the visit.  During your visit, be inspired by the “Mural of Love” painted on the ceiling of Jay’s own “Sistine Shed”.

A Word From the Carver
Many is the time that my grand pop sold a decoy for under $20.  Now his sell for thousands.  He raised 9 children doing it.  Come visit our family for a genuine Chincoteague decoy souvenir.  Not only will you enjoy it year after year, but some day it too will be worth considerably more.

Welcome to our island!  An island rich with history and famous for shell fish, ponies, and decoys.

My grandfather, Ira Hudson, was one of the world’s most famous decoy craftsman.  Today, his decoys sell at auction for tens of thousands of dollars.

“Ira Hudson decoy sells for $49,000 at Ward auction.”  New York Times – April 1, 1995

At another Ward auction a wood duck sold for $82,500!

Like my grandfather, I offer a variety of carvings from primitive to elegant stylized wood sculptures.

You and your family are invited to visit my showroom for a trip back to the past blended with the third generation of Hudson decoys.

If I can provide you with any information about our island, please feel free to call on me.

            Very truly yours,
            Jay Cherrix
