Posted 06/30/10 - The JACL National Convention is being held June 30 - July 4, 2010 in Chicago.  A link to the JACL Midwest District Council website has been added in the Links page.  The Chapter Brewers Game is coming soon - Sunday July 13, 2010.  Our annual Picnic is coming up too at Marx Park on Sunday August 1, 2010.  Check the newsletter for details. .

Census WeekNational JACL is promoting the 2010 Census with a JACL Census Week of Action.  There are two documents they are circulating that you can read here.  The first is "The JACL Census Week of Action", the second is "JACL Counting Japanese Americans 2010 Census Brochure".  Please take a few minutes to read these informative documents..

Posted 02/23/10 - Those of you who attended the Inaugural know that the new 2010 Chapter Directory is being distributed.  Member who didn't attend should be getting theirs soon.  Be sure to look at the ads in the directory and try to support the advertisers!  Here's a link to a new advertiser's page..

Posted 02/20/10 - Stewart Ikeda notified us about a free event being held at UWM on March 4, 2010.  It's a presentation of "Vincent Who?" a documentary about Vincent Chin who was murdered in Detroit by two white autoworkers at the height of anti-Japanese sentiments. It features interviews with the key players at the time, as well as a whole new generation of activists.  Thurs., March 4, 6 PM: Screening at UW Milwaukee Union Fireside Lounge, 2200 E. We received a notice from National about a girl named Natalie Nakatani,
who has been battling leukemia for the past year and now is in desperate need of a bone marrow donor.  It is as easy as four swabs from the inside of your cheek with a q-tip. Posted 02/02/10 - There was a nice turnout for this year's Inaugural Luncheon.  Those of you who attended know that Adam Schrager was unable to speak at the event due to family illness.  We did get to hear about his book, hear a short bio on Adam and have the opportunity to purchase his book at a very special price.  Our MDC Director gave us an update for our District and the National organization.  He then talked about the upcoming National Convention being held in Chicago June 30-July 3, 2010.  Congratulations to Eddie for his National JACL Certificate of Appreciation and to Masaru for being awarded our Chapter Member of the Year.  Don't forget our 2010 membership drive - the member recruiting the most new members will win a prize!  Check the next newsletter for details.  Photos from the Inaugural are in the Photo Gallery.

2009 News

Posted 12/8/09 - The Christmas Party is over.  Hopefully everyone had a good time!    Here are the Party photos in the Gallery .  Our next event is our Inaugural Luncheon.  It's going to be at Klemmer's Banquet Center on Sunday, January 31, 2010.  We'll start registration at 12 Noon with lunch being served at 12:30PM.  Our program this year will feature Adam Schrager a historian, broadcast journalist and author of The Principled Politician: The Ralph Carr Story as our guest speaker. MDC's Regional Director, Bill Yoshino, will update us on the 2010 National Convention being held in Chicago. Posted 11/5/09 - Yes, you came to the right place.  We just changed a bit.  Google changed to a new website development/hosting system.  That has resulted in a new look for our website.  We're just beginning to change the converted site to utilize some of the new features in Google Sites.  Check back here to find out what changes.  Let us know if there's something missing or out of place by e-mailing wijacl@gmail.com.

We had our annual General Meeting/Game Night at Wilson Commons.  Watch for Photos soon.  Congratulations to the newly elected board members.  We'll be inaugurating them at our Inaugural Dinner in January 2010.

Posted 10/11/09 - Our Chapter hosted the MDC Fall Meeting this weekend, Oct. 9-11, at the Hyatt Place hotel near the airport.  Friday evening we had a reception with sushi and a variety of other appetizers, snacks and desserts.  Saturday we got down to business with meetings from 9AM-5PM with a short break for lunch.  After the meetings we split into two groups for dinner at Jalapeno Loco and Kegel's Inn.  Meetings concluded on Sunday morning.  Check out the photos here.

Posted 8/16/09 - We had a special event where we collected individual member histories and our chapter history.  Our organizers prepared a fantastic lunch as a "reward" for the oral history participants.  The chapter history will be submitted to the Midwest District Council as part of a project to compile histories on the district chapters.  Photos are posted here.

Posted 8/13/09 - The Annual Picnic was fantastic!  The weather was perfect - not too hot, not too cold and no rain!  Check out the picnic photos in the Photo Gallery.  Hope you enjoyed the variety of food and family fun (and didn't mind the the long food line).

Coming up on Sunday August 16th is our Oral History Luncheon.  We've invited our most "experienced" member to come to share their personal histories to help us to preserve our chapter history.  We'll be sharing the information with the Midwest District Council as a part of their project to obtain oral histories from the MDC chapters.

Our Chapter is working on an oral history project with MDC.  We're having an Oral History Luncheon at 11:30AM on August 16th at Wilson Commons.  Invitations have been sent in the mail.  Please RSVP - we need your histories!

Posted 5/17/09 - Put on your "thinking caps"!  We're posting a VERY old picture from our Historian.  It's a group picture from 1948.  Can you identify anyone in the picture?  We have identified some but we need your help if we're going to figure out everyone.  There are enlargements on the Photo Archive page.  e-mail us at wijacl@gmail.com if you know anyone.  We're compiling a Chapter history as a project for the Midwest District Council.  If you have any other interesting recollections, you can send us those too.

Posted 4/1/09 - No, it's not an April Fools Trick - the April Chapter Newsletter is out!  Be sure to sign up for the big Brewer game - scheduled for July 12, 2009.  Try the pretzel recipe - it's GOOD! Congratulations to our award recipients honored at our Inaugural Lunch.

5/15/08 - Michael F returned to Milwaukee after his tour of duty in Iraq to a warm welcome from family and friends on 4/24/08 (photos in the Gallery).  Congratulations to Kevin M for being awarded a prestigious Nohl Fellowship (Click this link to read the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel article).  Mark your calendars for the Milwaukee Brewer game on July 13, 2008.  Twenty people have signed up for a day of tailgating fun and Brewer excitement!

 4/13/08 - Spring is Finally here! Check the News page for the latest Chapter newsletter. Get the details on our upcoming Brewers game on July 13, a recap of the Inaugural and Christmas Party in addition to lots of other Chapter news. The Spring MDC meeting is coming up in Omaha, Nebraska, on Saturday May 31. The National Convention will be held in Salt Lake City, Utah, on July 16-20.

2007 News

12/27/07 - Happy Holidays! The December issue of the Chapter Newsletter is posted in the Newsletter links near the bottom of the News page. Be sure to read about the upcoming Inaugural Dinner on January 27, 2008 at Klemmer's - make your reservations before Jan. 18, 2008.

12/02/07 - Another successful Christmas Party! The snowy weather couldn't stop our members, families and friends from attending. Even Santa braved the snow to deliver gifts to the children. New photos are up in the Photo Gallery. There are also photos from Holiday Folk Fair. You can see Tom being honored at the Opening Ceremony. There are also photos of the award winning Cultural Exhibit Booth!

12/2/07 - 2007 Christmas Party.  The Annual Christmas Party was held at the Wehr Nature Center in Whitnall Park.   The party was highlighted by a visit from Santa Claus shortly after a wonderful pot luck lunch.  

11/17/07 - 2007 Holiday Folk Fair International.  On Friday evening Tom S. was inducted into the Holiday Folk Fair Wall of Honor during the opening ceremony.  He was rewarded for over 60 years of volunteering with the Wisconsin JACL, Origami demonstrations and many other activities in the community.Saturday evening, the Wisconsin JACL Cultural Exhibit Booth was awarded a certificate for Best Interaction with Public. 

10/20/07 - 2007 General Meeting/Game Night.  We had our annual meeting at Christ United Methodist Church in Greenfield.  Our new board was elected and our year was reviewed.  Afterward there was a pot luck dinner, games and crafts.  Check the Meeting pictures at the Photo Gallery page. 

8/5/07 - The 2007 Picnic was held today at Marx Park in Brookfield.  Things were a bit wet early in the morning but by the time we started to set up it was dry.  The cooks have the corn and chicken preparations down to a science!  The new teriyaki recipe make things so much easier.  The new venue was excellent with easy access and nice facilities.  Check out the Picnic photos in the Photo Gallery.

2/18/07 - The 2007 Inaugural & Recognition Dinner was held at Seigo's new restaurant in Sussex.  This year we honored the veterans from our chapter.  Congratulations to  our newly inaugurated board members and many thanks to all of our veterans!

5/16/06 - The Wisconsin Chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League opened its new chapter website at http://wijacl.googlepages.com today.  This site will contain useful information about the chapter including a calendar of events, a chapter history, a newsletter archive and links to other useful or interesting sites on the Internet.  Is there anything you would like to see on this site?  Please e-mail comments and suggestions to wisconsin@jacl.org.

5/16/06 - The Wisconsin Chapter's Elizabeth Campell Scholarship has been awarded to an outstanding student.  The chapter awards this scholarship to a student demonstrating outstanding academic achievement, community involvement and participation in extracurricular activities.   Find out who won the scholarship in the next newsletter - due out SOON!
