What is this? It's a directory of completely user-generated maps of wifi hotspots in the UK. We couldn't find a decent one for our ace town (Cardiff) so thought the demand must be there. It soon became clear that there was a bigger demand, so we set up this directory. Every map is owned and administrated by a member of the public that knows that area. There's no point us running it. We'll leave it to the experts. You! And we would prefer you to take the credit, as well. There's other directories/maps out there. Why have you set a new one up? To
be honest, we're based in Cardiff and we could never find a decent one
for here. Besides, many of the others seem to be moderated or
controlled so that they become out of date very quickly if no-one's
paying attention. Our maps are completely open for anyone to amend, so
they will never be out of date. Well,
we're looking at merging the maps once we have enough. But for the time
being we think that it works better if you can just go to the city of
your choice (e.g. wifi-in-cardiff.co.uk) without having to go to a big
UK map first. We also believe that it's nice for other people to own the maps to their cities, rather than us owning a map to a place we've never been to. Plus it makes it easier to promote locally, and gets
recognition and kudos for whoever set it up. No. You can make it look as groovy as you like, if you have those special super-powers. However, we would like to keep to using Google Maps, and the same coloured placemarkers, just to keep things uniform. But we know that some of you are smart with APIs and design, so could make it look a lot cooler than the normal Google layout. Do I have to register a domain name for it? Not at all, no. Entirely up to you. The reason we recommend it is that it's just a lot simpler for you to promote and tell people about locally if it has an address that's easy to remember. The site's not very good, is it? Not
at the moment, no. We'll be getting a proper site sorted very soon. The
concept for the maps, the first map and the site, took a sum total of
90 minutes to make, so give us a bit of slack, eh? :) Let us know if
you have any recommendations for decent apps/platforms that allow
non-developers/coders like us to set up a nice looking site, with a
decent CMS. |
