Interested in a career in consulting?

If you answered yes, then come to the Rice Consulting Club's Mock Consulting Interview & Case Study event on Thursday the 29th of October at 8:30 pm in the RMC 2nd floor conference room.

Can't make it to this meeting? No problem. Join the Rice Consulting Club group on Facebook to receive information regarding future meetings.

The Rice Consulting Club (RCC) is a student run organization that facilitates unique opportunities for exposure to premier consulting firms and provides a head-start for students interested in the consulting industry. Working with our faculty sponsor, Director of Career Planning at the Jessie Jones School of Business, Deanna Fuehne, we will review case studies, hold mock interviews, and bring in representatives from various consulting firms to give you a taste of life as a consultant at their company. In the past, the RCC has gained hands on experience by consulting for on-campus organizations, such as coffeehouse.

Again, join us on Thursday on Thursday the 29th of October at 8:30 pm in the RMC 2nd floor conference room to experience a mock consulting interview & case study. For more information about the RCC, email rconsultingclub@gmail.com

The Baker Institute is honored to bring together leading diplomats, political scientists, economists and historians to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, a watershed in European and world history. When the wall fell, policymakers faced the unprecedented challenge of establishing the foundation for a unified, stable and prosperous Germany within a peaceful Europe. This academic conference will examine the economic and political consequences of the sometimes-treacherous path to German unification.

This academic conference will follow Friday evening's panel discussion on German Unification.

Hello,
My name is Shamsa Mangalji. I'm a sophomore student at Columbia University, but am currently taking classes at Rice, under the status of 'Visiting Student.' I will be here until the end of this school year. I was looking for on-campus housing for the rest of this semester and next semester, but Housing and Dining informed me yesterday that a Visiting Student could not live here; only transfer students could secure a bed on campus.

I'm currently looking for an apartment close to campus or close to a Lightrail station, given that I won't have a car until February. Honestly, those are my only criteria for housing; I'm very low-maintainance, and would just like to have a place to sleep and keep my things as soon as possible! I've currently been sleeping on friends' couches etc, but I'd love to have a permanent place to stay for this semester and next semester, quickly. I'm happy to pay any amount of monthly rent necessary.

Thank you so much,

Shamsa Mangalji

One third of the world’s population is infected with tuberculosis.  A rapid, effective, and widely available diagnostic for tuberculosis could save approximately 400,000 of them each year1.

Learn how the brightest minds in science and technology are designing and disseminating diagnostic technologies to stem the tide against tuberculosis and other diseases:

·         Integrated Technology Platforms for Poverty-Related Diseases, Evan Lee, FIND Diagnostics

FIND is a product development and implementation partnership devoted to developing and implementing diagnostic tools for poverty-related diseases.

·         Microfluidic Point-of-Care Diagnostics, Sam Sia, Columbia University

Sia’s research focuses on developing simple and powerful microfluidic techniques for biomolecular detection that can be used to tackle global health problems.

·         Nanosensors to Probe Antibiotic Resistant Superbugs, Rachel McKendry, University College London

Rachel McKendry of the London Centre for Nanotechnology studies nanomechanics of antibiotics and superbug resistance with the aim of developing nanosensing technology for applications in disease diagnostics and drug screening.

·         Lab-on-a-chip technology for measuring CD4 Counts, John McDevitt, Rice University

Originally developed for use in rural Africa, the lab-on-a-chip provides results at the point-of-care so HIV/AIDS patients can initiate or adjust anti-retroviral therapy immediately.

In May 2008, the Board of Trustees passed a resolution to raise $1 Billion by 2012 to fund the Vision for the Second Century.  We are currently seeking a select group of student leaders to help with our Annual Fund Student Advisory Committee.  All students are invited to participate on the committee. The committee’s immediate purpose is to facilitate discussion and cooperation between those involved with the Centennial Campaign and those most directly impacted by the campaign -- current Rice University students.  Activities related to the campaign and the Annual Fund will be on-going starting this month.  All interested students should contact Sean Britton at seanb@rice.edu or 713-348-3287.  We need at least one representative from every college, and our first meeting will be within the next two weeks.

JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

As a graduating senior you are no doubt trying to decide what you will do next year, or even for the next 5 years. I want to let you know more about opportunities in the environmental advocacy field.

Environment America is the federation of state-based environmental advocacy organizations, from Environment California to Environment Texas to Environment Massachusetts. This year we are hiring graduating college seniors for our fellowship program to help change the environmental direction of our country: to solve our energy problems; fight global warming; preserve our open spaces; clean up our air and water; and make an impact on many other environmental issues. Environment America gives recent graduates the opportunity to mobilize and empower Americans and work with legislators on environmental policy. We build and demonstrate support for proposals at the state and federal levels to ensure that decision makers hear from and pay attention to the public.

We actually already have a couple Rice alums on our staff: Dana Hoffman (Will Rice '09) and Kirsten Schatz (Wiess '03), so you'd be in good company.

We will be holding an information session and interviews on campus on Thursday, October 29th at 5:30pm in the Kelley Lounge at the RMC, and we’ll hold on-campus interviews throughout the day on Friday, October 30th at the Rice Career Center. I encourage you to participate in either opportunity and contact Alejandro Savransky at asavransky@environmenttexas.org or 512-610-0084 if you are interested. If you can't attend either opportunity, please apply online at http://www.EnvironmentAmerica.org/jobs .

Sincerely,

Kirsten Schatz (Rice '03)

If your credit is ruined by a thief who steals your information and runs up thousands of dollars of debt, it can jeopardize your future employment opportunities, result in declined home and car loan applications, and raise your interest rates.

Most consumers do not want to consider these threats because purchasing convenience and speed are in high demand these days, even though fast and easy financial transactions increase the risk of credit information loss and theft.

Officers Brucus Owdley and Jacob Web from the Financial Crimes Unit of the Houston Police Department discuss how to protect your credit information, how to monitor your credit reports, and the steps to take if your credit information is stolen.

Bring your lunch and join us above the Hanszen College Commons; no RSVPs required.

Attention Rice Shuttle riders!

Have you ever waited for a shuttle for more than ten minutes?  Have
you done so standing in Houston's rain or heat?
Have you ever wondered where the shuttle was and whether it would be
faster just to walk to your destination?

Wouldn't you like a way to find out where the shuttles are without
staring down the street?

We are a Senior Design team working on a solution to your problem: a
Bus Tracking System for Rice.  This system would track the locations
of the shuttles, determine their route, and provide this information
back to you, the user.
Please take our survey at the following link to help us design the
best user experience possible.

Dear Colleagues and Students:

Abdo Yazbeck, Ph.D. (Rice University, Economics, 1991) will be speaking at Rice University in a lecture jointly sponsored by the Econometrics and the Empirical Economics Workshops of the Economics Department.   Dr. Yazbeck is the Lead Health Economist and Program Leader of the Health and AIDS Program at the World Bank Institute and will discuss a new landmark report on health disparities.  The title of his talk is "Attacking Inequality in the Health Sector: A Synthesis of Evidence and Tools"  and will be held this Friday, October 30, 3:30-5:00, in Baker Hall Room 116.

I would greatly appreciate your rsvp (via email to rsickles@rice.edu) if you wish to attend this lecture in order to assess the need to possibly move the lecture if seating capacity is an issue.
I will alert you via email if a move is necessary later in the week.

Best regards,

Robin Sickles

Want to make an impact on the culture of service at Rice?

Applications are now being accepted for the Rice Service Council.

Rice is a small campus that has several effective student organizations that promote service and advocate for social responsibility. However, often there is a lack of communication amongst these campus groups, which can limit their creativity, resources and impact.  As a Rice volunteer, you have the opportunity to have a tremendous influence on the culture of service on campus by becoming a member of the new Rice Service Council. Working with other student leaders, you will not only represent your service organization but also increase collaborative efforts both on and off campus.

The Rice Service Council has four different initiatives:
    1.    Create a forum in which Student Service Organization leaders can learn, share, and benefit from each other
    2.    Coordinate a campus wide annual Volunteer Recognition Event
    3.    Increase Leadership Development, including coordinating the Fall Service Retreat
    4.    Advertise and advise on the awarding of the Community Service Grant, Spirit of Service Awards and scholarships

For more information, or to apply, visit the CIC's website (http://cic.rice.edu).  Applications are due by 5:00 pm on Monday, November 9, 2009.

If you have any questions, please contact Sarah Hodgkinson, Assistant Director of the Community Involvement Center, at sarah.hodgkinson@rice.edu or 713-348-6409.

Homecoming is less than 3 weeks! That means it's time to pick your 2009 Homecoming King and Queen! Last year, Hurricane Ike won Homecoming King for reminding us what "Making It Rain" really meant, and Kathy Collins, VP for Finance, won Homecoming Queen for her complete overhaul of club finances.

Rice Investment Society is starting a speaker series that is bringing
successful financial professionals from the Houston area to Rice.  The
aim of these events is to help undergrads who are interested in
finance learn about the industry, discuss various career paths, and
network with established professionals.  These events are going to be
fairly informal and after the speaker talks about his background and
career choices, the remainder of the event will be discussion based
and will rely on questions from the audience.

The first speaker will be J. Cole Dawson, the President of the Houston
division of Telemus Capital Partners.  Prior to joining Telemus, Mr.
Dawson served as Senior Vice President-Private Banking & Investment
Group at Merrill Lynch. He is also a former Vice President-Private
Client Group at Goldman Sachs, and has  served as a financial analyst
in Investment Banking at Salomon Brothers.

The event will be held on Nov. 10th at 8:00PM (Location TBA).  We are
trying to gauge interest so if you think you might attend please email
John Tracey at jrt1@rice.edu

Hope to see y'all there!

Rice's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee will be holding a campus and community  wide cell phone November 9-15. I was hoping to get a listserv announcement out at each of the colleges. I have attached a copy of the flyer. If possible, could this attachment also be attached to the listserv email. Here's the message:

Cell Phone Drive! Old Phones Save Lives!
Rice's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee is holding a week long cell phone drive beginning November 9th and continuing through homecoming weekend. The donations will go toward Hope Phones and Front Line SMS - to organizations devoted to providing cell phones for health care workers in developing countries. Donation boxes will be located across campus and at all sporting events during that week. So, drop off your old phone and save a life.

Thanks so much,
Alexandra Ernst

The Partnership Walk (http://www.partnershipsinaction.org/walk/about/index.php) is an event sponsored by The Aga Khan Foundation USA (http://www.akdn.org/akf), an incredible organization that supports innovative projects in Health, Education, Rural Development,Civil Society, and the Environment in Asia and Africa. The Walk is a public event to raise awareness about how people here can make a difference in ending global poverty. It promotes partnerships among
Americans and people in the developing world. The Walk raises funds for innovative,cost-effective projects that improve the quality of life of the most vulnerable, especially women and children, in some of the poorest areas of Asia and Africa.

I'd like to get a Rice team together to fundraise, volunteer, and walk the walk (hehe).Let's try to hit at least $1,000! There will be dancing, some great keynote speakers, and, last but not least, FREE INDIAN FOOD!!! :)

The Walk will be held at Sam Houston Park Downtown (1100 Bagby Street
Houston, TX 77002) on Saturday, November 14, 2009, and bus transportation will be available from Rice at 10:00am...We will return back to campus at 1:00pm.

up to be part of the 'Rice University' Team, and start e-mailing people to raise some
money!

On November 20 and 21, 2009, the University Police Department will host an assessment center as part of the selection of three new Police Officers.  An assessment center has been in use as a part of the hiring process for nearly fifteen years.  It was chosen because it provides a fair method for determining the most qualified applicant for the position of Police Officer.

A critical component of a good assessment center is the quality of those observing behaviors and judging the performance, the assessors. In addition to the vital part assessors play, role players also have great impact on the success of this process.   We are asking the support and assistance of the community by participating as either an assessor or role player.  If you are interested in being involved in either of these capacities, please respond by email to this message.

The schedule is as follows:

November 20, 5p-630p, Assessor/Role Player Training and Orientation
November 21, 8a-3p, Assessment Center

Thank you for your consideration,

Dianna Marshall

Our first meeting will be near the end of October (with free food!)

Dear student,

Leadership Rice aims to provide opportunities to students like yourself who aspire to
become leaders. Every year we fund student-run projects through Envision Grants. These
grants provide up to $2,500 in support for student projects that promote service, foster
leadership development and innovation, and plan for sustainability. Implementing a
project funded by an Envision Grant is an excellent to demonstrate leadership and make a
positive impact in our world.

The deadline for Fall 2009 Envision Grant is October 22nd 2009 at 5 p.m.

Fellows' Backgrounds and Project Descriptions:

Lila Kerr (Sid Rich '12) served with Projects Abroad in Liberia, Costa Rica during the summer of 2009. She worked in a government preschool program for disadvantaged children who are undernourished or whose parents are working during the day. The program aims to teach (colors, shapes, numbers, the alphabet), foster interpersonal skills, and provide a hot meal in addition to serving as free childcare.

Janice Loh (Baker '11) worked at Gongnonglu Primary School in Xian, China, with Cross-Cultural Solutions. In a school with only 2 English teachers, she assisted the teachers before and during class. She also taught the children using books, songs, and games.

Jing Luo (Sid '11) traveled to Xi'an, China with Cross Cultural Solutions. She taught English to tour guides at the local history museum as well as taking care of orphans with special needs at Starfish, a local orphanage. Jing learned more about the culture of her native country while addressing the issue of children with special needs this past summer.

Rodolfo Velasquez Lim (Jones '11) worked with Orphanage Outreach in the Dominican Republic. For two months, he was at an orphanage called El Hogar Esperanza de un Nino, located in a small town called Monte Cristi. At the orphanage he helped take care of the orphans, assisting with chores, and teaching English at local public schools.

An incident that occurred off-campus Sunday in the home of three Rice students serves as a reminder to take safety precautions to protect your home, possessions and well-being. Fortunately, due to some quick thinking and prompt reaction from the three roommates, no one was injured and property was not stolen.

Around 12:40 p.m., a male burglar entered an unlocked door of a house on Dryden Street and tried to steal a handbag that belongs to one of the undergraduates who live there.  When the owner of the handbag walked in on the burglary, the suspect pushed her down until one of her roommates intervened and demanded that the man leave the house. The students then called 911 to notify the Houston Police Department. The Rice University Police Department is now assisting HPD with the investigation. The suspect was described as African-American, approximately 30 years old, 5’10” to 6’ tall, approximately 200 pounds, short black hair and light brown eyes. If you have seen a suspect matching this description or have information that might be helpful in this investigation, please contact HPD at 713-222-3131 or RUPD at 713-348-6000.

No matter where you are, even at home, you need to be vigilant.  Below are a few simple precautions that you should incorporate into your personal safety plan:

* Always lock your doors, windows and other access points.

* Develop a home safety plan.

* Be alert to crime trends in and around your neighborhood.

* Participate in your neighborhood watch or help get one started.

* Report anyone you see loitering in your neighborhood to the police at the numbers above.

Thank you for helping keep Rice safe.
Captain Dianna Marshall

 * The Beer Bike Track is now open to biking during daylight hours everyday unless there is an event.  Please make sure prior to riding that you do a safety check of the track and surrounding flagging to make sure nothing will impede your ride.  Those who choose to use the beer bike track do so at their own risk.
 * Gate 54 (closest parking control gate to the South Stadium Lot in West Lot 5) has been relocated to the street between the two lots to provide better lot security in that area.  West Lot Commuter parkers (with proxy card) and visitors (with credit card) may still use West Lot 5.  South Stadium Lot parkers (with proxy card) will now gain access to their lot through Gate 54.  Visitors need to use West Lot 5 since South Stadium Lot requires a permit.

To whom it may concern:
Hi, my name is Gabi Huesca, I am a senior student at Lovett college, and the Rice Chapter's Amnesty International Internal Vice President. As a means of generating awareness across the nation about the banning of books in public institutions, Amnesty International has deemed the week of September 27th through October 3rd Banned Books Week. Books of all genres and authors are banned in public libraries and schools. We at Rice Amnesty want to generate more awareness on campus on this issue by having a Banned Books reading, and are requesting your help. We would like to extend an invitation to any student to read an excerpt from one of your favorite banned books on campus on Tuesday, September 29th between 7 and 8PM (refreshments will be provided). Please let me know if you are available on this date, and if you are willing to participate (and what book you would like to read from!). Thank you so much for your time!

Sincerely,
Gabi Huesca

Rice University has adopted a NEW and ENFORCEABLE Bicycle Safety Policy!

Please read the following for some highlights of the policy. The entire policy may be found at rice.edu/bikesatrice – click on “Bicycle Safety Rules”.

REGISTER YOUR BIKE

·         Bicycle registration is now MANDATORY

·         Helps RUPD identify lost, stolen or impounded bicycles

·         Disseminates safety information

·         Registration is FREE

Register at: rice.edu/bikesatrice or stop by the RUPD – 713-348-6000

BELL OR YELL

·         Rice has adopted a “Bell or Yell” program for cyclists to announce their approach when passing pedestrians from behind.

·         You will get a free bicycle bell when you register your bicycle.

OBEY THE RULES OF THE ROAD

Cyclists riding in the street are required to comply with motor vehicle traffic regulations
Cyclists should obey traffic signs and always ride with the traffic.
At all stop signs, cyclists must stop and yield the right-of-way to other vehicles and pedestrians
RUPD will ticket cyclists for right-of-way violations at intersections

YIELD TO PEDESTRIANS

Pedestrians have the right of way on sidewalks, in crosswalks, and around any stopped bus.
Pedestrians are encouraged to be aware of their surroundings, but it is the cyclist’s responsibility to yield to a pedestrian.
Cyclists may not pass any bus that has stopped to pick up or discharge passengers.

RIDING PROHIBITED IN COVERED WALKWAYS

Covered walkways are OFF LIMITS to bicycle riding.
Because covered walkways have blind corners and are located in front of building entrances, cyclists must walk their bicycles in these areas of the campus.
RUPD will issue citations for riding a bicycle in these prohibited areas.

RIDING BICYCLES ON SIDEWALKS

Every person riding a bicycle on a sidewalk MUST:

Ride in a careful and prudent manner
Slow to a near walking pace within 10 feet of any pedestrian or building entrance
Yield the right of way to pedestrians
Give an audible signal before overtaking and passing any pedestrian
A cyclist who strikes someone may be liable for personal injuries and property damage.

LOCK YOUR BICYCLES IN RACKS

Cyclists are expected to secure their bicycles in the bicycle racks.
Rice has bicycle racks that are conveniently located throughout the campus.
Bicycles secured to fences, sign posts, stair railings or locations other than bicycle racks may be ticketed or impounded. Unsecured bicycles may be impounded for safekeeping.

ABANDONED BICYCLES WILL BE REMOVED

Bicycles left unattended for an extended period of time are presumed to be abandoned and as such will be removed by the RUPD.
Suspected bicycles will be tagged with a removal end date.
Abandoned bicycles will be held at the RUPD for 60 days before they may be disposed.
To retrieve an impounded bicycle, the owner must provide proof of ownership.

Register your bike TODAY at rice.edu/bikesatrice or stop by the RUPD – 713-348-6000

Thank you from the Bicycle Safety Committee:

Rice community,

After years of planning, the Recreation Center staff is truly excited to be just days away from the opening of the Barbara and David Gibbs Recreation and Wellness Center.  This new facility, which we are proud to share with the Rice community, promises to be a state of the art, marvelous, gigantic, awesome Recreation Center.  However, before we can open access to this new space, there will be a few required closures to the current facility over the next two weeks:

The current Recreation Center will be closed this Friday, September 18th, for our move into the new Barbara and David Gibbs Recreation and Wellness Center.  This shutdown will allow the moving company to safely transport all necessary equipment and supplies across campus while ensuring we can re-open Saturday morning, September 19th as scheduled.  We anticipate most full-time staff will have limited access to phone extensions and e-mail from Friday morning, September 18th until Monday afternoon, September 21st.  The main office line (x4058) will be staffed throughout the transition.  Full-time staff can be reached via this extension during the move.

The administration offices will remain closed for the week of September 21st - 25th.  The full-time staff will be available at their normal phone extensions.  Recreational programming and open recreation will continue throughout the week, and we will have administrative staff at the Operations Desk to process membership applications and answer any Recreation Center related questions.

In addition, on Wednesday, September 23rd, the current facility will close at 5pm for an all-staff training in the new building.  We will reopen Thursday, September 24th at 6am.

Finally, the current facility will close Friday, September 25th in preparation for the dedication and grand opening of the Barbara and David Gibbs Recreation and Wellness Center.  At the conclusion of the ceremony (currently scheduled for 2-2:45pm), all Rice community members will be granted complimentary access into the new building until 10pm to sample new equipment, tour the facility, or sign-up for memberships.

Please note that in spite of the opening of the new building, the indoor pool that is currently utilized will remain operational from Saturday, September 26th until the 50-meter pool at the new site is completed.

Thank you in advance for your understanding and cooperation during this transition.  Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions-

This year's Common Reading is The House at Sugar Beach: In Search of a Lost African Childhood, by Helene Cooper, a memoir of a difficult upbringing in war torn Liberia.  To supplement the reading we bring you this extraordinary story, in an award-winning documentary film, about a small band of Liberian women who came together in the midst of a bloody civil war, took on the violent warlords and corrupt Charles Taylor regime, and won a long-awaited peace for their shattered country in 2003.
Prof. Elias K. Bongmba, Harry and Hazel Chavanne Chair in Christian Theology and Professor of Religious Studies, will lead a Q &A session immediately following the film.

Hey'll,

It's time to show some RICE LOVE & SPIRIT!!!

This Sunday is Explore Rice and the Student Admission Council (SAC) needs your help! We're expecting more than 500 high school students (not including their parents, siblings, etc) and we need volunteers to help with checking-in, ushering, student panels, setups, etc!

The Explore Rice programs provide the opportunity for high school students to meet Rice students, faculty, and staff and to explore what makes Rice distinctive. Attendees will also have the chance to learn about the variety of academic and extracurricular programs available and attend sessions on campus support services, experiential learning, or financing your education. These programs are designed especially for high school juniors and seniors.

Here's a brief schedule of Explore Rice:
11-12:30  Setup
12:30-1:30 Check-In
2:30-3:15 Academic Panels
3:30-5:15 Panels
5:30-6:15 Tour
4:30-6:30 Refreshments
6:30-7:30 Cleanup

If you can volunteer ANYTIME between 11 am till 7 pm this Sunday (9/13/2009), please e-mail back to ricesac@rice.edu (with subject: EXPLORE RICE).

The Rice Program Council has scheduled SCREW YER ROOMMATE for Friday, September 18h 2009!

How It Works:
1) Find a date for your roommate.
-Scope out your classes, check cubby's at Fondren, or hunt down people you see walking through the Quad. Feel free to post classified ads on the discussion forums/wall on the facebook event (http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/event.php?eid=151982667173). Do what you gotta do to get your roommate a Screw.

2) Talk to prospective date's roommate.
-Plan an outfit for your roommate's to wear. The way they find each other is through their attire, so be creative. Possible examples: PB&J, Adam & Eve, Cookies & Milk.

Schedule of Events:
6 PM- Find your date in the Academic Quad!
-Enjoy some Redbull drink while you wander the Quad and search for your other half.

Go have dinner with your date and a group of friends.

10 PM- Meet back at Willy's Pub for After-Screw.
-Share your Screw stories, get FREE FOOD, and end your evening the right way.

Shirts:
There is a new shirt design this year! Rice Program Council will start selling shirts next week for $8.00. There's a limited supply so make sure you have the money handy and check with your RPC reps soon.

The Shell Center for Sustainability invites you to join us for Water in the Houston Metabolism:

Will there be enough water for all of us in the next 100 years? What is the current quality of our waterways? How can it improve and why? The Shell Center for Sustainability at Rice University considers these and other questions on water in the upcoming conference “Water in the Houston Metabolism – Houston’s Water Needs and Water Quality for this Century”. National and local experts come together to address questions about water, one of our vital resources, and Houston’s sustainable development, growth, natural environment, water, health, and the policies that can make a difference.

The Shell Center for Sustainability in partnership with the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy’s Science and Technology Program and the Health Policy Forum will host this second annual conference on sustainability in Houston series.

The all-day event will take place at Baker Hall on Tuesday, October 13, 2009.

Rice University’s Intensive English Program, offered through the Susanne M. Glasscock School of

Continuing Studies, is recruiting Conversation Partners.  We have approximately 207 students from

over 38 different countries in our English as a Second Language Program, all of whom are looking to

meet native English speakers.

Our Conversation Partner Program is not a tutoring program.  The main goal is our students to be able

to practice English in an informal setting.  The time commitment required may be as little as an hour

a week.  We will match you up with one of our students.  Where and when you meet will be decided by

you and your partner.  No second language is required, just the desire to meet a new friend and learn

about other cultures.

Next session dates: September 8 – October 26.

If you are interested, please respond to fl@rice.edu by September 10, 2009.

This is Charlene Lo and I have a proposal to start a Medical Chinese course (CHIN 318) for the Spring

2010 semester. Dr. Lilly Chen used to teach this course over 2 years ago here at Rice, but this

course has not been offered since because of limited student interest and enrollment. I am very

interested in restarting this course, but in order for me to do so, I must recruit other genuinely

interested students. If I garner enough student interest, this course will be offered Spring 2010.

This class is worth 3 CREDIT HOURS and will only MEET ONCE A WEEK FOR 2 HOURS.
Here are the options that we should consider and find a time we can all agree on:

either Wed or Fri nights at 4-6, 4:30-6:30, 5-7, 6-8, 6:30-8:30, or 7-9 pm

If there is another time that you could also meet, email me the time and I will consider that.
VOTE FOR CLASS TIMES HERE AT THIS LINK: http://doodle.com/tisrwues4p3rp88q

We must have a strong interest in taking this course or the department chair will find no reason to

open this course. Chen Laoshi has told me that I must compose a formal request and have each

interested student show support. Since meeting in person and signing a petition may be inconvenient,

I have attached a formal request and I would like you to SIGN (TYPE YOUR FULL LEGAL NAME) THE LETTER

AND REATTACH IT AND EMAIL IT BACK TO ME.

Please sign this form and EMAIL IT BACK BY 11:59 PM September 1. If you need an extension, please

email me.

This course will not be very time-consuming. As long as you have moderate background in Chinese (like

you speak it at home, have taken classes before, can understand and engage in light daily

conversation), you will be fine in this class. This class emphasizes speaking and learning medical

terminology. We will not be tested on actual vocabulary not directly related to medicine. For example

we will learn a range of things from "my stomach hurts" to discussing blood pressure, heart

conditions, etc. If you are worried about the intensity of the class, don't. We will have input in

what Chen Laoshi teaches because she has not offered this in 2 years and she truly wants the class to

be about us and our interests. Also, she is never offering this course again. She is only making this

exception (for Spring 2010) because I have showed much interest. So, if you have ever wanted to learn

about medical Chinese, now is your chance!

Do spread the word to friends and classmates! There is strength in number.

Thank you, everyone! I really do hope we can take this class together!

During this very busy week, safety and security may not have been uppermost in our minds.  I am sure that we all have had plenty to occupy our thoughts; class work, jobs, friends, and family. As recently as last evening, we were all reminded of the need to be vigilant about protecting ourselves and our personal property.

Unfortunately, a vehicle burglary was reported to the University Police Department about 8:33 PM last night. That burglary resulted in the loss of a new (still in the box) computer belonging to one of our freshmen students.  The computer was taken from the backseat of a secured and unoccupied vehicle while it was parked for only four minutes near the Brown Master’s House.  The total loss was substantial not only to the freshman student, but to the upperclassman’s vehicle as his window was broken out to gain entry.

Please keep in mind these simply safety precautions to better safeguard your property and person:

Parking Lot Safety -

·         Place valuables in the trunk or under the seats.

·         Always lock your car, even if you leave it for a very few minutes.

·         Have your keys in hand before you leave to go to your car.

·         Have someone walk you to your car, especially at night.

·         Use the escort service at any time when you feel uneasy or worried about getting to and from your college.

·         Check your backseat before entering your car.

Personal Safety -

·         Try to walk with friends when moving about, especially at night.

·         Be alert to your surroundings and walk with confidence.

·         Walk where the sidewalks are well lit and well traveled.

·         Trust your gut. If you feel like someone is following you, go to a populated place where people can help you and then call police.

·         Know where the campus emergency phones are located and do not hesitate to use them.

·         Report anyone you see loitering around the colleges or academic buildings.

·         Always lock your door and don't prop open your room doors, even if you are gone for a short time.

Please don’t hesitate to contact the University Police Department for any safety or security needs.  You may do so by dialing 6000, (713) 348-6000, or by picking up any blue light or elevator phone.  Off campus dial 911.

RUPD has noticed an increase in thefts from the academic buildings around campus. Laptops, wallets and money are among the most common items stolen. Please remember to secure your valuables at all times. Lock cabinets, drawers, and doors to offices and labs when not in use. It only takes seconds for a thief to "grab and go." Please report any suspicious people to the RUPD at 713... immediately.

This is more artsy volunteering I guess (Kathleen :D)

Best of luck with exams/papers/projects/final designs! This could be a study break...come enjoy art and wine/appetizers. Entrance tickets is $50, for volunteers it is FREE!

Rice Faculty, Staff, and Students,

For the past year, IT has been researching
methods to reduce internal spam and
prevent forged sender addresses.

One of the ways we can accomplish these
goals is by changing the way Rice email
is sent.

The change requires authentication
(NetID login) for all email sent from
computers on the Rice network.  We anticipate
implementing this change in October.

Printers, FAX machines, and equipment
connected to your computers may not be able
to complete the required login, so we will
create an exception for these types of
devices. We are currently creating a list
of all the Rice devices that cannot complete
NetID login.

If you know you have a device that cannot
provide a NetID login, please contact your
IT support staff or the IT Help Desk
(helpdesk@rice.edu) to ensure the device
is placed on the exemption list.

Next week's IT update will include instructions
on how to test your personal and department Rice
email messages to determine if they are being
authenticated.

Additional details about the login requirements
can be found in the IT web site:
http://www.rice.edu/it/Announcement3.html

The Rice University Debate Team is looking for up to 16 debaters for next year. Formally known as the George R. Brown Forensics Society, we represent Rice at various competitions throughout the year. This year, we travelled to competitions in California, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, Oregon, and Washington State.

If you are interested in joining the team, please contact one the Director of Forensics Dr. David Worth (dworth@rice.edu) or the Assistant Director of Forensics Glenn Prince (gwp2@rice.edu). Tryouts will not be held until the Fall semester. The Website can be found at http://www.ruf.rice.edu/~forensic/index.html

Here are some helpful facts about the team.

· The time spent in preparation varies based on how much a debater wishes to succeed. That said, on average team members can spend between two to four hours a week researching current events.

· Prior experience is helpful but by no means required. Team members can join with no previous competition.

· All competition fees, transportation, food, hotel accommodations are paid for by the team. Team members bear no financial responsibility for the competitions. Students are free to retain their frequent flier miles.

· Selection on the team lasts for one academic year. Every continuing team member must attend the tryout.

· The team never competes during Final Examinations. In addition, as a University-sponsored club, team members are entitled the right to make-up missed work.

Feel free to email me as well if you have any specific questions about debating for Rice.

Sincerely,

Kern Vijayvargiya

Rice Students,

Keep your computers clean this summer!

If you use PC-Cillin for antivirus protection (provided by IT at no cost to you), you probably need to get a new serial number to keep your
software license from expiring in June.

Login to the IT Self-Service page: https://my.rice.edu/ITSelfService/
and select the link for PC-Cillin Serial Number.

This link generates an automatic email from the Help Desk with your new
serial numbers for PC-Cillin 2007 and PC-Cillin 2008.

Want to test PC-Cillin 2009?

We need more input on the latest version of PC-Cillin.  Instructions for downloading the software will be included in the email message with your 2007/2008 serial numbers.

VISEN Distinguished Lecture Series Presents

Tsinghua University, Beijing, China

DATE: Tuesday, April 28, 2009

TIME: 1:30 pm – 2:30 pm

PLACE: Duncan Hall 1070

Title -- Vistas in Quantum Computing

Abstract -- With current advances in technology, it appears that computing and communication devices based on quantum principles may one day become a reality. Accompanying this anticipation is the emergence of an energetic new interdisciplinary field known as Quantum Information Processing, which involves physics, mathematics and computer science.  Why is there such enthusiasm over this new field?

What makes quantum algorithms potentially much more efficient than conventional ones? In this talk, we will give an exposition of both the fundamentals and some recent progress in this area, focusing especially on algorithmic and complexity issues. Examples will be taken from the topics of quantum communication complexity and quantum cryptography, among others. The talk is for a general audience with any scientific background; no specialized knowledge of quantum theory is assumed.

Bio -- Professor Yao received a BS in Physics from National Taiwan University, a PhD in Physics from Harvard University, and a PhD in Computer Science from University of Illinois.  >From 1975 onward, Professor Yao served on the faculty at MIT, Stanford, UC Berkeley, and during 1986 – 2004, as William and Edna Macaleer Professor of Engineering and Applied Science at Princeton University.  In 2004, he left Princeton to become a Professor of Computer Science at Tsinghua Univeristy in Beijing.  He is also a Distinguished Professor-at-Large at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Professor Yao was recipient of the prestigious A.M. Turing Award in year 2000 for his contributions to the theory of computation, including communication complexity, pseudorandom number generation, and quantum communication. He has received numerous other honors and awards, including the George Polya Prize, the Donald E. Knuth Prize, and several honorary degrees.  He is a member of the US National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Undergraduates, return all books by Wednesday, April 29.
If you need to borrow library materials during the summer, renewals will

All books are subject to recall by other patrons, so be prepared to

As the Rice University Police Department has done for the past ten years, we are participating in the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics.  As part of this effort the police department is participating in various fundraising efforts around campus and in the community.  13th Street and Sammy’s have again supported our fundraising efforts through the sale of torches with the Flame of Hope.  Finally, we have the traditional annual Torch Run T-Shirts for sale.  Shirts will be available at Rice Fest, but you can also get your t-shirt by coming to the police department or calling your favorite officer for a personal delivery.  Shirts small through extra-large are $10 and double X and larger are $12.

Please help your police department support Special Olympics!

Thanks!

Several Rice students were implicated earlier this week for their involvement in an April
Fools joke--you might recall an email from President Leebron announcing the merger with
BCM and his intentions to transform Rice into the Rice Premedical Institute.
Surprisingly, the administration failed to see the humor. As part of our
punishment we have been fined, so in proper Rice fashion, we will be
selling t shirts in an attempt to absorb the costs. The design for the
RPI (Rice Premedical Institute) shirts can be viewed at
* http://tinyurl.com/ricepremed *. We will be taking orders at lunch in both
Hanszen College and Jones College. The shirts are $9 (+1.5 for XXL & XXXL)
if you pay in person. Additionally, you can purchase tshirts online at *
http://www.owlnet.rice.edu/~cre1/purchase.html *. Any other requests should be sent to
jonesthirdsouth@gmail.com.

Thanks

To All Recreation Center Patrons,

If you currently have a basket registered in your name at the Recreation Center, please kindly remove your personal items and lock if you are NOT going to be on campus beyond MAY 8, 2009.  The Recreation Center will be CLOSED Saturday, May 9 and Sunday, May 10 for graduation and will not be accessible, so please plan ahead.

However, if you are planning to stick out another HOT summer here in Houston, you will have until JULY 31, 2009 to remove all personal items and locks.  There is no place for us to store any personal items left behind prior to annual maintenance.  All locks left behind will be cut and items discarded.  Upon returning to campus in the fall, you will be able to reclaim the same basket.  To assure your personals remain YOUR personals, your lock remains yours, please allow ample tine to empty your basket.

Thanks,

The Recreation Center Staff

The Challenges of Multicore: Information and Misinformation

Abstract:

Now that we have broken the threshold of one billion transistors on a chip and multicore has become a reality, a lot of buzz has resulted -- from how/why we got here, to what is important, to how we should determine how to effectively use multicore. In this talk, I will examine a number of these new "conventional wisdom" nuggets of information, to try to see whether they add value or get in the way.  For example: What can we expect multicore to do about saving power consumption? Is ILP dead? Should sample benchmarks drive future designs? Is hardware sequential? Should multicore structures be simple? Is abstraction a fundamental good? Hopefully, our examinations will help shed some light on where we go from here.

Biography of Yale Patt:

Yale Patt is a teacher at The University of Texas at Austin. He holds the Ernest Cockrell, Jr. Centennial Chair in Engineering and is Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering. His research in computer architecture, done jointly with his PhD students, has resulted in among other things the HPS microarchitecture (1985), the Block-structured ISA (1989), the Two-level Branch Predictor (1991), SSMT aka helper threads (1999), Runahead Execution for out-of-order machines (2003), and ACMP (2008). He has earned appropriate degrees from reputable universities and more than enough awards for his research and teaching. More detail is available on his web site http://www.ece.utexas.edu/~patt

Students, Faculty and Staff,

As the semester comes to a close, many of you will be away from campus this summer, and Fondren Library wanted to give you something to look forward to with your research in fall '09.  We are excited to announce the beta release of our new search and discovery tool for library resources.

http://search.library.rice.edu

Using this unique, single-box research tool, you can search and refine results from Fondren's catalog with ease, AND search online articles (from 50 of our most popular databases) at the same time. Woodson Research Center Finding Aids and Fondren's website resources are also included in the search results. Continued development with this tool will also include resources such as DSpace, Google Books, Google Scholar and more.

Of course Fondren's classic catalog will remain available, as well as hundreds of subscription-based indexes & databases,  but we hope you take the time to try out http://search.library.rice.edu and give us your feedback.

If you are wanting to access Fondren's resources from off-campus this Summer, please see: http://library.rice.edu/services/access-to-electronic-resources

Kind Regards,
Fondren Library
