What is Geocaching.....

If you are reading this the chances are you have overheard someone talking about Geocaching and wondered what the heck is that?

Basically it's an excuse to go out for a healthy walk and find a hidden cache utilising Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and a few hints from a website.  It's a grown-up treasure hunt!

There are over 1 million hidden containers all round the world waiting for you to find, sign and then log your encounter on the Geocaching website.  On the official website you need to create a free account, then you can access cache information by entering your location.  It will show you a google map with your nearest caches clearly marked.  You click on the cache that you are interested in, read the info file, decrypt the hint file, download the GPS coordinates file to your GPS receiver and then head off for a nice healthy walk.  You have to be secretive near the caches location because you don't want non geocachers finding the cache, because they may steal or destroy it.  Once you have found the cache, you sign the log book in side.  There maybe treasure (nothing of value  - lol), these are small trinkets left behind by other geocachers, you can take one but you need to leave something of similar value in it's place.  If you have a family, the kids will love this bit, oh and the secrecy it make them feel like spies.
