Morgantown-Google Application Table of Contents: 389 Spruce Street Morgantown, WV 26505 March 26, 2010 Dear Google: On behalf of the City of Morgantown and its residents, we are pleased to submit its Google Fiber for Communities application. As Morgantown citizens, we are proud of the strong Mountaineer community and its growing industries, and the nation is taking notice. For example, in 2009 Forbes Magazine named Morgantown as the 3rd “Best Small Places for Businesses and Careers,” and CNN Money ranked Morgantown as the 7th “Best Places to Launch a Small Business.” This project will enable the City to emerge as a leader in education, healthcare, and business in the 21st century. We know Morgantown is perfect for the Google Fiber program because of its productive history of innovative collaboration. With nearly half of its residents in academia, we are geared towards creative research and innovation. In the 1970’s, Morgantown partnered with the U.S. Department of Transportation to test the Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) system; the PRT test proved so successful that it has been studied and replicated more than 200 times internationally. As a City with more than 16 percent of the jobs in the high-tech industry, Morgantown is also a prime location for business and advanced research. The Morgantown area, which hosts research facilities such as, the Center for Disease Control’s NIOSH Center, the NASA IV&V Center, the FBI Center, and the Blanchette Rockefeller Neurosciences Institute, among others, is vibrant with tomorrow’s energy, health care and education technology potential. Rarely will you find a City that has such diverse economic and natural factors in one small geographic location. All of Morgantown believes that it is a perfect fit for the Google Fiber for Communities initiative. The City leadership will work tirelessly with Google to engage and entertain all segments of the community. Backed by West Virginia University and its community, as well as the businesses and residents of the City of Morgantown, we are confident that Google’s experiment will not only succeed in here, but it will be a model project for replication across the country. Sincerely, Bill Byrne Mayor City of Morgantown Dan Boroff City Manager City of Morgantown |
