What We Are Learning At West Wood Players
The Early Exploration Program
The children seem to be really enjoying our new phonics program, called “Fun Family Phonics”. It is a program designed to build pre-reading skills. The children are taught unique ways of recognizing the shapes and sounds of the letters of the alphabet. They are encouraged to become detectives, much like the lead character of the program, “Detective Dave”. Detective Dave investigates the world around him and tries to discover the hidden shapes and sounds of letters in his environment. Each letter of the alphabet is presented with an accompanying story and picture that details Dave’s discovery. For example, Dave discovered the shape of the letter “a” by regarding a lone apple in a tree. As he tried to reach for the apple, the creaking of the tree reminded Dave of the sound of the letter “a”. A very catchy song also accompanies each of these discoveries. Each phonics lesson ends with an interactive game designed to reinforce the sound and shape recognition of the featured letter. At the end of the program, each child that participates will take home their own alphabet book containing all of the practiced letters!
The Kindercare Program
Our Caring Counts activities continue to provide the kindercare children the opportunity to grow in their understanding of others thoughts and feelings. Using a variety of strategies the children learn:
We are proud of how the children put into practice all they are learning at "Caring Counts".

Our Philosophy
We welcome all children and families within our community. We believe children have the right to be respected as unique individuals and to develop independence as his/her potential allows. We provide a safe, caring, stimulating environment. We promote the development of self-esteem and responsibility through the encouragement of choice making, respect for self and acceptance of differences in others. By creating this environment we enable children to build a circle of friends from whom they will gain acceptance, support, self-worth, and a strong sense of belonging. Staff serve as positive role models and provide care that is supportive, nurturing, warm and responsive to each child's individual needs. We respect parents as the primary and most important provider of care and we believe that parents and centre staff are partners in children's care and education.
