ARRIVAL AND DISMISSAL

Arrival

  • Those students registered in before school care may arrive as early as 6:00 am.
  • Those students not registered in before school care may arrive no earlier than 7:45 am. Teachers are not on duty until then and children cannot be allowed in the school until there is teacher supervision.
  • Those bringing students to school in the morning must enter the car rider line as directed by school staff. You will be directed to the designated drop off points in front of the building where you may safely allow the student to exit the vehicle. Do NOT drop off a student at any point other than those directed by our staff. If your child is a car rider, you must get in the car rider line to drop off your child. If you need to come in with your child, you must park in a parking space, not by a curb or in the center of the isles. Leaving your cars not properly parked is causing traffic to back up because parents dropping off their children in the car line can't get through to exit the campus. Parents parking illegally may be subject to a citation. Also, citations will be given to those parents who do not have their children in a car seat or a seat belt. Please for the safety of your child and yourself, BUCKLE UP!
  • If you bring your child in, please come through the main entrance and take your child to the gym or cafeteria. DO NOT stand in the hall to wait for the bell. The entrance on the West side of the building is for bus students ONLY. Those doors stay locked and the students are trained to never open them. Not for strangers and not for parents. If you try to enter through those doors the teachers on duty will not let you in.

Dismissal

  • Students will be dismissed at 3:00 pm. unless they are enrolled in after school care. Those students in after school care must be picked up no later than 6:00pm.
  • If it is necessary to pick your child up early, please come sign them out in the office by 2:30pm. The last 30 minutes of the day are very hectic and to ensure that all students get home their designated way no student will be dismissed after 2:30pm. At no time during the school day will students be called to the office until the parent is in the office to sign them out.
  • Those picking up students will be directed to enter the car rider line and proceed to the pick up points. Please do not park to come into the school to pick up your child to avoid the car rider line. This is not fair to those parents who are following the rules.
  • When the pick up line is full, you will be directed to shut off your engine. When ALL cars in the line have shut off their engines, the children will be called and dismissed to their respective cars (to aid in identifying which cars children should be dismissed to, it is suggested that a piece of paper with the child or childrens names be placed in the dash of the car). When that is safely completed, those cars will be allowed to leave and those in the back of the line will be directed to the front. This procedure will be repeated until all children are loaded. Parents will NOT be allowed to park in the parking lot and walk to the school to pick up their children. Our procedure is specifically designed with the safety of our children as our primary concern and no deviation can be permitted.

BEFORE & AFTER SCHOOL CARE

The program is available through the school for a fee. Before school care  hours are from 6:00 am - 8:00 am. After school care hours are from 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm. For more information, please contact Vicki Cranmore, Day Care Site Director, at 855-6143.

DRESS CODE

Westview Elementrary School requires appropriate dress for students and staff. Excesses in attire, gromming, hairstyle, cosmetics, jewelry, and accessories draw attention to the individual and thus distract from the learning, which is the main purpose of school.

Students wearing articles of clothing or accessories that are not permitted will be sent to the office. Parents will be called to bring replacement clothing. The unacceptable attire will be returned to the student's parent. Continued disregard of the dress code will result in further disciplinary action.

Westview Dress Code:

  • NO T-shirts with vulgar or suggestive messages for alcoholic products or other drugs. NO athletic jerseys.
  • Students ARE permitted to wear shorts or skirts as long as they are below fingertip length when arms are held at their sides. NO short shorts.
  • NO athletic oversized shorts, spandex shorts, or any pants with holes above the knee.
  • Pants must be worn at the waist and must fit at the waist.NO sagging or oversized, baggy pants or clothes.
  • Tennis shoes or rubber sole shoes must be worn. NO clogs or crocs, NO tennis shoes with skates built in, and NO sandals, or flip-flops.
  • NO halter tops, tank tops, or tops with spaghetti straps, or bare middriff tops.
  • Caps, hats, bandannas, or sunglasses will not be worn in the school building except on designated days.

CONFERENCES & SCHOOL VISITS

TEACHER CONFERENCES

If you need a conference with your child's teacher, please call or write the teacher a note to make an appointment. Teachers are not available during class time, nor at the beginning of the school day or at dismissal.

SCHOOL VISITS

Please follow these guidelines when visiting the school: Please use the front entrance. Check in at the front office before visiting other parts of the school building. All visitors must sign in and wear a guest or volunteer badge. If you need to talk with your child's teacher, arrange a mutually agreed upon time. Please don't interrupt class time and ask the teacher to step into the hall. Young siblings and relatives are not allowed to visit the school for the day.

SCHOOL FEES

No student can be required to pay a fee for any activity during the school day. Schools are advised to post the “fees not required” statement prominently and/or notify parents at the beginning of the school year in correspondence, Student/Parent Handbook or posted on the school’s website. If not enough money is collected to cover the cost of the field trip it will be cancelled and payments refunded. This is a State mandated rule.

HCDE ATTENDANCE POLICY

HCDE attendance procedures are as follows:

By law students are allowed five (5) unexcused absences per school year.

HCDE will allow parent excuses to serve as documentation for three (3) additional personal illness days.

After the five (5) unexcused days and the three (3) additional personal illness days, parents must provide medical services documentation for the following: personal illness, family illness, or personal.

To avoid student absences being recorded as unexcused, a written statement signed and dated by the parent or guardian and any medical documentation should be presented to the appropriate school official within five (5) days of the student returning to school.

Please call the school or email Sharon McDarmont before 8:00am if you know your child is going to be absent so the attendance record can be marked correctly.

BEHAVIOR POLICY

Hamilton County is a zero tolerance school system. Students shall adhere to the following rules...

  1. Recognize and respect authority of all adults
  2. Do not mark or deface property
  3. Put garbage and waste in proper places
  4. Use good manners and treat others kindly
  5. Do not use improper language
  6. Follow classroom news.
  7. Fighting is not allowed *

* Fighting and any other activity which endangers another student is considered a serious offense and can result in out-of-school suspension.

Behavior that is improper as noted by the Principal may result in parents accompanying their child during special activities and/or field trips. Students who misbehave could be required to do school service such as clean-up.

LOST & FOUND

Please check the school's lost and found located in the cafeteria for any item your child might have left at school.

Items not claimed by the Christmas Break or by the end of the year will be donated to charity.

TARDIES, ABSENCES & EARLY DISMISSALS

TARDIES

The tardy bell rings at 8:10 am. If students arrive late, they should be escorted by their parents to the school office to sign in. Please write in the school log the reason for tardiness. Do not take the child directly to the classroom. Please note that three tardies or early dismissals equal one absence.

ABSENCES

If your child is ill or unable to come to school, please call the school office after 8:00 am in order to notify the teacher. A written note must accompany the child upon return to school explaining the reason for the absence. Children will be counted absent if they miss 1/2 of the school day. This includes late arrival or early dismissal.

EARLY DISMISSALS

Should you need to pick up your child before the end of the school day, please use the following procedure:

  1. Write a note to your child's teacher indicating the reason for dismissal and the approximate time you will arrive to pick up your child.
  2. Upon arrival, go directly to the school office to sign the Dismissal Log, and the child will be called to the office. This keeps classroom disruption to a minimum. Children will not be called for early dismissal after 2:30 pm except in an emergency.
  3. Please note that three tardies or early dismissals equal one absence.

Students are required to go directly home after school unless the student is involved in a school approved activity. Students need to bring a note if they are not going home in their usual manner. When the request involves bus transportation, the note must be delivered to the bus driver by the child. The note must be signed by the Principal.

EMERGENCY & MEDICAL INFORMATION

EMERGENCY INFORMATION

Emergency information is kept on file in the office. It is the responsibility of parents to provide the school with accurate and up-to-date information in case of an emergency. Parents are encouraged to give two emergency phone numbers. Parents will fill out an emergency early dismissal form during registration.

The school cannot treat old wounds or cuts, remove splinters, treat skin diseases such as impetigo, poison oak, or treat pink-eye or any other type of skin problem.

ADDRESS CHANGES, PHONE, ETC.

It is very important that the school have current addresses and phone numbers in order for parents to be contacted in a special needs situation. Please be sure to notify the school if there are any changes during the school year.

MEDICATIONS

Medication will not be dispensed to students. This includes, but is not limited to, aspirin, Tylenol, cough medicine, and antibiotics. An exception is when children require long-term prescription medications such as Ritalin. Only in this case will the medicine be administered by the school nurse in compliance with the following regulations:

  1. A written permission form, signed by both the parent and the child's physician, is provided to the school and includes the child's name, medication name, time to be administered, dosage, and possible side effects.
  2. The permission form must be updated when there is any change in dosage or time of medication. A new permission form must be provided to the school at the beginning of each school year.
  3. Medication in the original prescription bottom must be brought to the school office by a parent or guardian and refilled in like manner. No medication is to be brought ot or from school by the student.

SUPPLIES

INSURANCE

Parents are given the opportunity early in the year to purchase the school insurance. This is encouraged for parents who do not have medical insurance. Policies are available for the school day or for 24-hour periods.

BOOK AND SUPPLY FEES

School textbooks are supplied by Hamilton County. The student is responsible for any damaged or lost books including library books. Parents are given a copy of supply fees at registration and they should be paid within the first month of school. The Principal will work with parents needing to make special arrangements.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES

Limited school supplies are available for students to purchase in the office daily before school begins. Check with the office for pricing.
