What We Sail

Sailing Fleets

Our main sailing fleet model is the Kyosho SeaWind. It’s a one meter yacht that’s very competitive right out of the box. Some modifications are allowed but the intent of the SeaWind models we sail are to keep it as a ‘one design’ boat so that the sailing skills of the skipper is the main factor leading to successful racing. There are usually a number of SeaWinds ready for fun sailing after our monthly meeting. We throw out a couple of marks and start the clock. It’s a good place to practice starts, mark roundings, tacking and generally learning to get the most out of your boat. We hold several ‘One Meter Sport’ regattas during the season and any one meter or smaller boat can sail. It’s rather informal but we do try to adhere to racing rules. There are a number of online stores that sell the SeaWind and spare parts. You can also  visit the AMYA website and the SeaWind Class Owner's website for more information and building and sailing tips. Peter Jennings jenningscap@msn.com is our Fleet Captain.

We’re starting another ‘one design’ fleet based on the Graupner Micro Magic Racing Sailboat. It’s very small, 21 inches long and weighs less than 2 lbs ready to sail. Early feedback from current skippers indicate the boat sails well and is extremely stable in various wind conditions. The kit and spare parts can be ordered online. More information about the Micro Magic can be obtained by visiting the AMYA website,  the Micro Magic Class Owner’s Association website, or our Fleet Captain George Kramer desertsam@excite.com

For those who like to experiment, we offer the 36/600. This development class has few rules allowing the skipper to experiment with everything from hulls, foils, rigs, and sails. Light hulls and generous sail area make them excellent boats for the light air we generally experience in Arizona. We often compete in Scottsdale and Mesa. Visit the AMYA website for more information on this exciting class. Jay Barnes thirtysix30@hotmail.com, the AMYA class secretary, is also our Fleet Captain.

Several skippers sail schooners and other non traditional sailing vessels during our ‘holiday’ events (President’s Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, etc.) Check the calendar for the dates.  The AMYA website has a section about schooners and other sailing vessels as well as several links if you are interested.
