Scale Boating

Director of Scale Activities: Chuck Goerke chuck@gceintl.com

Scale boats and ships are generally motorized (electric) and are usually built to a set of plans that attempt to accurately model a vessel from another period or a vessel currently in service somewhere around the world. Ships of any scale are welcome but the most common seem to be ¼” to the foot and 1/8” to the foot. We have several scale meets each boating season and set up a navigation course so that skippers can test their skills at docking, navigating channels, maneuvering in tight quarters and other boating skills. Bring your models to the pond, finished or not. We like to compare notes and there’s usually a lot of Q & A time to share ideas and ‘how to’s’. There are a number of websites and scale suppliers to help with everything from complete kits to the smallest parts for all scales. The Useful Links page lists a number of these sites.

2012 President's Day Scale Meet, February 11, 2012

The WVRCM annual President’s Day Scale Meet was held on February 11th at the Litchfield Park Lake.  There were about 25 skippers in attendance with radio control scale models ranging from 7ft long down to ay 18 inches.  The weather was perfect all day as evidenced by the large number of visitors during the day.  The West Valley View newspaper article sure generated a lot of interest.

Medallions were awarded for “Best of” categories

Best Military…USS Long Beach…Chuck Goerke

Best Working Class…Pusher Tug and Barge…Art Burkette and Ralph Henrich

Best Pleasure…Sea Fever…Jerry Koondel

Best Sail…J Boat …Jay Barnes

Jay’s ‘J’ also won Best of Show.

Our next Scale event is scheduled for Veteran’s Day in November but there has been some talk about adding more events to the calendar.  We’re going to discuss it at our March meeting so if you have comments or suggestions be sure to be there.  We’re also considering adding an award for Best Navigator so give some thought to how we can handicap the various different size models to make it relatively even for everyone.

Thanks to Rowland Stevens and Chuck Goerke for setting up the course Friday afternoon.  Sure made for a lot more time for boats in the water.

Also thanks to the folks who stayed and helped with the breakdown and cleanup of the area
