West Carter County Volunteer Fire Department proudly protects 17000 people living in an area of 30 square miles. We operate out of 1 station that protects a primarily rural area. Our department is a public department whose members are on a volunteer status. West Carter County Fire Department was organized in 1969 by a group of concerned citizens who were members of the Milligan Optomist Club. The original station was in an old garage on the campus of Milligan College. The fire department is fully volunteer with each member staying at the station at least 2 times each month. We are the only department in Carter County TN to have personnel at the station each night. We conduct training the third Monday of each month and require new members to obtain Firefighter I status from the State of Tennessee within the first year of membership. We now serve as First Responder for the Carter County Rescue Squad on all emergency EMS calls in our area and have proudly served the citizens of western Carter County for 34 years. In 2007 West Carter responded to 300 emergencies. As of February 29, 2008, close to 60 calls have already been answered. (Courtesy of K. Eller)
