Deborah Wenzel

Deborah Wenzel is an artist and art teacher.  She happily divides her time between making art and sharing her love of art with children in Ruidoso elementary schools. Her own artwork is in several galleries and collections throughout the region and beyond.

Deborah Wenzel’s painting style has evolved from contemporary realism to abstract shown here. Much of Deborah Wenzel’s current work is painted pyrography. Pyrography, also known as pyroengraving or woodburning, is drawing on wood or other surfaces, using heated tools. After the drawing is completed, she paints with oil or acrylic. The colors are beautifully warm and luminous on various woods. These paintings reduce complexities to simplified, flattened forms that shift back-and-forth between representation and non-objectivity.

Deborah was born on Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. She attended college in the Kansas City area and graduate work at the University of Texas at El Paso. Deborah was a graphic designer for over 25 years. In Ruidoso, she designed advertising for numerous businesses. She also taught at 3 colleges. She was a graphic designer in Kansas City before moving to the southwest.
