Course Information

Club welfare officers are at the forefront of implementing the safeguarding policies and procedures within their sports. It is essential that they feel confident about their role and its boundaries, that they are well supported within their organisation, and that they are clear about where and from whom to access support.

At club level, Time to Listen training consists of a three or four hour sport-specific workshop, delivered by national sports governing body (NGB) tutors. Check our FAQs to see if your NGB currently offers this training.

Club welfare officer training will prepare participants to:

• Define the roles and responsibilities of the club welfare officer and their relationship to designated persons at county/regional and/or national/organisational level
  
  
• Describe how their role will work in practice
  
  
• Familiarise themselves with their NGB safeguarding policy, procedures and good practice guidelines
  
  
• Describe those elements of legislation and government guidance that are relevant to their role in safeguarding children’s welfare
  
  
• Identify the specific roles and responsibilities of statutory agencies including local safeguarding children’s boards (LSCBs)
  
  
• Demonstrate skills in how they will relate to statutory agencies and the NGB in individual cases of actual or suspected child abuse

The camp will run for the following dates during the Half Term Holidays (Wednesday 06/06/12 – Friday 08/06/12), drop off and registration will run from 8:30 until 9:00. Sessions/Activities will start at 9:00 and run through to collection between 16:00 and 17:00.

You can opt for your child to take part in any number and combination of days on the camp and payment options are as follows;

Is looking for support coaches available to run sessions in schools and leisure centres on a part time basis.

You need a clean/valid driving licence

Be able to work flexible hours

Work within a 20mile radius of Cardiff

Minimum of £10.00 per hour based on experience

The Mars Refuel Drink Fund, which was set up to encourage people to play their favourite sport for longer, opened for entries on 2 April.

The Fund has one gold (£1000), four silver (£500) and eight bronze (£250) awards to donate to the most deserving applicants every month for the next six months.

Applications can be made online at www.marsrefuel.com offering support with anything from equipment and travel costs, to improving training grounds and club houses. The fund will be accepting applications from April 2 2012.

In 2009, the Westerleigh Judo Club from St Leonards, were awarded £500 from the Mars Refuel Drink Fund. They used the money for running one of their annual camps which attracted over 100 participants.

Bristol teenager Ashley Mathias, 18, a former British Schools champion, also received £500 to support his training and in January captured a bronze medal at the Commonwealth u20 Championships in Cardiff.

The fund is open to residents of, and clubs and organisations based in the UK and Republic of Ireland only. Applicants must be 12 years or over and only one application will be accepted per person, club or organisation.

WJA Membership / Licence Fee’s

The Welsh Judo Association will be adjusting their membership / licenece fee’s as of the 1^st April 2012.

Please note the following changes:

The extra £5.00 added onto the new membership fee is to cover the cost of the Licence book as it was decided by the Board of Directors, that it was unfair that new and existing members should pay the same.

Please find attached a list of your current members, if you have active players who are not on this list they are not insured and they will not be eligible for Gradings or competition so please ensure all members of your club have a valid licence.

We are looking for players to represent Wales in the 2012 UKSG; the venue will be the Excel arena in London the same venue that will be used for the 2012 London Olympic Games Judo tournament.

World number four and 2010 world judo champion Kayla Harrison has backed Welsh judoka Natalie Powell (-78kg) to represent Team GB at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

American star Harrison, hotly tipped for gold in London, come up against Builth Wells’ British number one at the Hungary World Cup on Sunday and defeated her in the first round en route to winning gold in Budapest.

Powell, 21, a Biomedical Science student at Cardiff University, has made a blistering start to the year with three gold medals, as she’s topped the medal rostrum at the British Trials, Commonwealth Championships and International Antwerp u23 Open.

Pan American Games champion Harrison said: “Natalie is a strong young lady, this was my first contest against her and I think I’ll be seeing a lot more of her at such events.

“As a tough left hander, I think Natalie has a lot of potential and with some experience under her belt will be able to compete in London. Six months is a long time and she has a lot of work to do but I believe with the right coaching and attitude, I will see her in London.”

Welsh Judo Head Coach Craig Ewers said: “It's very encouraging that a champion of Kayla's stature feels that Natalie has some potential.

“We are pretty pragmatic with regard to the situation, we realise there is a lot of work to be done and as such we are just focused on obtaining the best possible result at the next World Cup in Poland as a good result there places Natalie in the frame for selection to the European championships, the final official Olympic Games qualification event.”
