"Be the change you want to see in the world" Gandhi
When we learn we are tranformed, reshaped and made new. Our new form can be good or bad depending on who or what we are learning from. I am a teacher because I believe in the power of learning and the possibilities of young people to go out and be far more extraordinary than myself or my teachers and leaders. I am also I a teacher because I believe public education is the most important foundation of a democratic society. Ultimately, I teach because I think learning is fun.
My mom tells me I came home from school the first day of Kindergarten and conned my little brother into playing school. I don't remember wanting to be anything other than a teacher when I was a kid. When I got into middle school, my love of science was solidified. During high school, I took summer school to get my social studies classes out of the way so I could take extra science courses during the school year. I graduated from high school with 6 years worth of science under my belt. During college, I studied biology and got to work with a pathologist who was researching Malaria. I also got to travel and live in the rainforest in Belize. In 2004, I received my teacher certification from Gonzaga and started teaching at Wellpinit. My first year of teaching, I taught elementary science. I worked with all of the elementary teachers to plan science lessons and taught grades K-5. In July 2005, I traveled overseas to Micronesia to teach on an island called Saipan. I lived there for 2.5 years and returned to Wellpinit in February 2008 to teach high school science.
