The Busy Women's Wellness Recess Tuesday, March 31st 7-9 p.m.

In support of Carilion's and KAIZEN's mutual goal of finding ways of caring for women in the community and empowering them to take proactive roles in their own health care, this event seeks to attract women in the community through a recreational and informative event with a special focus on creating a sense of fun, pleasure, and confidence in direct association with fitness, wellness, and self-care.

We recognize that women perform a multitude of critical roles in creating health and wellness in their families and in our community. In a world that continually increases in speed and complexity, it is especially challenging for women to prioritize self-care. Many women experience taking care of their well being as just another stress. This event is an opportunity to re-focus on our personal missions to create and sustain health and wellness. We are genuinely excited to put this event together (and maybe have a bit of Spring Fever, too).

Becky Marks Corey, Community Health Coordinator for CarilionClinic Stonewall Jackson Hospital and Karen Cohen co-founder and Programming Director at KAIZEN Wellness Studio are planning 2 hours of serious fun - precisely mixed with practical, immediate-use wellness wisdom. We've cooked up a festive menu of
Micro-Seminars, Demonstrations, a "Power Recess" class, and a pretty incredible collection of take-home gifts. We're featuring  unique service samplings from a variety of Rockbridge County key wellness leaders.

     The
amazing women at The Patisserie are cooking up their own tasty menu of healthy and delicious treats to share, and to showcase some great (and instant) healthy meal options.  They are serving  2 kinds of foccocia (one vegetarian and both gluten-free), polenta with veggies and asiago cheese, black bean quesedilla with cheese and spinach, and samples of their popular take-home dinners. Check out more of what they offer at  www.PatisserieCafe.net . We will also be having a group discussion on quick, easy and healthy breakfast and snack solutions. Former chef and caterer Karen Cohen will share a few family favorites with the group that you can try out at home immediately. We'll snack on Raspberry Cheese Dip, Peanut Butter-Ricotta Spread, and Fruited Yogurt Cheese.

To help put us all in the right frame of mind for our Recess, Tasha Walsh of Core Happiness Coaching will be leading us in an Opening Activity. Later in the evening, Tasha will guide us through some journaling, accompanied by Liz Drahos (Solace thru Sound). Liz is a Certified Music Practitioner who will open our minds to how sound is such a powerful yet unrecognized wellness component. Together Tasha and Liz present workshops and have produced a CD that will be available after the event. UPDATE: Liz is going to arrive early so she can enhance the space with music during the registration time before the event begins. Liz says she will be playing piano and some Native American flute.

Another highlight of the evening will be spending time with some of Rockbridge County's finest bodyworkers. Always in demand, Kim Coslett (Healing Therapies, Lexington) has confirmed that she will present some key information on the hidden value and benefits of therapeutic massage. She will be coming with another massage therapist from her office to provide chair massage... ahhh yes.....  Somewhat new to town and definitely someone you'll want to meet, Edwina Addison-Vita, another excellent massage therapist (with a background in physical therapy) will be joining us Tuesday night. We're hoping she'll bring her massage chair, too. (Lexington Massage Therapy)

Many people are still unfamiliar with a powerful form of bodywork called Structural Integration, or Rolfing®. We'll have a chance to find out more and ask lots of questions, because Pat Sandage has joined the party. Pat says,
" I believe that Rolfing® is fun.  It is an opportunity to do something for oneself that is simultaneously practical and liberating."  Come by and let Pat share her secrets. Another form of therapeutic bodywork you may not be familiar with is Reflexology, an ancient healing practice that has great focus on the feet. Patti DelVecchio, of Lexington Reflexology will be on hand (... on foot?) to demonstrate her soul-soothing techniques. Patti incorporates into her work the power of botanical essential oils in Aromatherapy, as well as Reiki, a Japanese form of energetic healing based on an ancient Tibetan technology.

Compassionate Eating is a wonderful concept, and a great name for Amanda Kaster's practice offering Dietetic Consulting Services. This Lexington-based registered dietitian has truly affordable, real-world support for the nutritional needs of you and your family. Amanda is an expert in food and nutrition and can translate the science and research of nutrition into practical solutions for healthy living. Amanda will be sharing some tips with us and making herself available for mini-consultations and to answer questions.

UPDATE:    Wanna' know more about this "Power Recess Class"?  Well,.. it's actually 2 classes, held during our 'Breakout Session' from 7:45 to about 8:15. The Recess #2 is a little longer so anyone can jump in to it for the final yoga and chi gung moving meditation component (read: gentle and no-sweat).

Recess Class #1 – For experienced exercisers who may be bored, in a rut, not getting the results they’re looking for, or just game to try something new and different. Try a taste of functional fitness training. Curious to try out the super-fun challenge of the BOSU? (Ha! What’s a BOSU?)  Does the thought of putting on boxing gloves make you smile? Try out some top quality cardio equipment like our recumbent bike, treadmill or Versa-Climber. Ask an ACE-certified personal trainer any questions that have been on your mind.

Recess Class #2 – This class is a spicy mix of dance fitness, dynamic movement, yoga, and body celebration. It is designed for women who don’t really like to exercise, but they like to dance. It’s great for those who don’t feel particularly comfortable with their bodies or in fitness clothes. And if you’re fit and love to dance you can also totally claim it for your own. This is the mini-version of the Athena Workout. Get ready to honor the goddess and the athlete within! (10 minutes longer than #1, so anyone can jump in for last 10 minutes of yoga and chi gung moving meditation.)

Especially for mothers and expectant families, Cassandra Perez, R.N., has established Birthways , providing wise woman doula care  in Rockbridge County and the surrounding areas. Cassandra specializes in helping women to find their own unique way to give birth, connecting to and unlocking their own inner birth wisdom.
Birthways offers an impressive array of services including both hospital and home birth labor doula services, including high risk antepartum & postpartum situations. Even overnight stays are an option!  Birthways can offer guidance with herbs & homeopathy for pregnancy, birth, and postpartumCassandra has developed an impressive online resource for pregnancy and childbirth called GIRL Net - Goddess is Rising Library. And if that wasn't enough, she has founded the Rockbridge County Birth Circle, a FREE gathering for women to meet and share information about pregnancy and birth. Circles are the first Saturday of the month at 10:00am at  the Rockbridge Regional Library in Lexington. Each month there is an activity or event for the birth circle. Cassandra invites women to come sit in a sacred circle, share your birth story, and listen to the voices of birthing women. Come meet Cassandra, and ask her about her work and The Blessingway Ceremony.

Two other businesses that are woman-owned and woman-centered, are IntimateU and Let's Make-up in Lexington. Both of these businesses are owned by the fabulous Tracey Lackey who has brought top quality foundational garments, lingerie, and cosmetics to the women of Rockbridge County. She offers a selection that cannot be found
elsewhere in the region and a warm personality that has no compare. Not only will Tracey be dressing up the gift bags with little treasures from her shops, but she will be offering private bra fitting consultations during the Breakout Session. It's amazing what the right bra can do to make us feel good, improve our posture, and celebrate the 'girls'.

To support us (more figuratively) in caring for the health of our breasts, Becky Marks Corey is bringing an arsenal of useful medically-based information from CarilionClinic. Becky will be setting up a table with her info, and making herself available to chat and answer questions throughout the evening. She is a great resource, a warm and gracious woman, and a true asset to the hospital  in her engaged service to the community. Representing CarilionClinic, Becky has been essential to generously providing a wealth of great take-home gifts... thank you Becky!

As we develop and evolve as multi-faceted women, it often serves our best interests to engage with a coach and/or a therapist. While quite different in their focus and approach, both professions can support us through life's transformations, both independently and in concert with each other. Tasha Walsh (Core Happiness Coach) combines both counseling and coaching in her work.
Nancy L. Johnston is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Licensed Substance Abuse Treatment Practitioner in private practice in Lexington.  With 30+ years of clinical experience in both mental health and substance abuse, Nancy has developed several specialty areas of treatment including codependence and mindfulness. Nancy will be attending as a participant but she will be bringing information on her Mindfulness Meditation classes and copies of her powerful book "Disentangle", written for people who want to emotionally break free from relationships that are unhealthy for them. Laurie Macrae of Positive Focus Skills   is a life coach passionate about engaging with women as they develop their full and true potential. She will be attending and shining her light - ask her about how she can impact your life.
