This is the Year to Buy a Rain Barrel or Finally Start Composting!
The Hamilton County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) has been preaching the benefits of rain barrels, composting, native plantings, and other conservation practices for years now. Rain barrels are a simple and easy way to reduce stormwater runoff, improve water quality, and conserve our water resources as you retain a source of clean, fresh, free water to use on your landscape. Composting reduces the amount of waste sent to the landfill while creating a free, rich soil amendment for your garden or flower beds. Native plants are hardier in our area and also provide benefits like erosion control and wildlife habitat while they beautify our yards. Unfortunately, it is sometimes difficult to find rain barrels, composters, and native plants, discouraging landowners from undertaking such projects. Well the SWCD has finally decided to take things up a notch and carry some of the products they have been recommending! They are now carrying various sizes and colors of plastic rain barrels, two types of oak rain barrels, various accessories for the barrels (like downspout diverters and pedestals), tumbling composters, bird houses, “The Blue Thumb Guide to Raingardens” book, 2009 plat books, tile probes, marking flags, and in the fall – native trees and shrubs. By purchasing from the SWCD, you are receiving items at a competitive price while also supporting their mission and helping protect Hamilton County’s environment and natural resources for future generations. Some items are available at the SWCD daily, while others need to be special ordered. Please visit our website (where you can purchase some items online) or call our office to get a copy of our “Items for Sale” brochure and start shopping! |
