We also found a new charity to support which is proving to be even more valuable to Webmart with regards to emotional and intellectual return. Locally based (Charlbury) charity SPECIAL EFFECT was granted the sum of £12,000 to purchase a special computer system to enable those who have little or no movement in their arms, or little control over their movements to use the computer to contact others through the use of SKYPE, email, social networking and letters. The system along with the software, which has been specially customised to meet the needs of the recipient, is to be offered on load to someone who is in need so they can work with it to improve their lives. During the time they have the equipment they will be able to raise funding to purchase their own system, at which time the computer will be moved on to someone else in need. This is a small charity run totally voluntary to help those who are physically disabled and in many cases have lost their independence/mobility. Matt Hampson, an ex under 21's England Rugby player was paralysed from the neck down when a scrum collapsed. Matt is now a patron of this charity and his courage and drive is an inspiration to us all. Matt attended a demonstration at Webmart to show us how the computer system worked and said that not being able to communicate when he was lying in hospital just after his accident was a most frightening experience. Had he had this computer system it would have made a massive difference to him.
This is the most amazing system which enhances the life of those severly disabled, and we wish them every success for the future. If you would like to know more about Special Effect their website is : http://www.specialeffect.org.uk/ |

We have decided to continue our support this year for Building a Future for Peruvian Children. Carol, who manages this charity, has performed miracles last year and with the £5000 donation she received from Webmart was able to get almost 500 children into school who, through poverty, would not otherwise have had the chance. This year we have increased our donation to £7500 in order to continue to support these children and provide an opportunity for more kids to have the chance of education.

In November 2009 we were in the very fortunate position of being able to continue our support for The Webmart Business School in Ethiopia.
After 18 months of training, the 28 students have completed their academic study and have begun planning their own businesses. It is our intention to support these students as they progress into self-sufficiency by way of micro financing. The idea is that they will form 28 new companies that could hire approximately 20 employees per business, creating up to 600 new jobs. More than 600 families could therefore benefit from the Webmart Business School
To start preparing these young men and women from Harar and neighbouring Babille for their future lives as business people, a 3 day entrepreneurship workshop was held in June this year. The main goal of the workshop was to strengthen the self-confidence of the students and to stimulate teamwork skills as well as the development of creative business ideas.
A further £25,000 has been donated to fund students for another year and we have planned to set an amount of money aside to start a micro-finance system to help these newly graduated students get their new businesses started.

The Webmart Charitable Trust is delighted to announce this years main donations to selected charities.
The Webmart Charitable Trust (WCT), set up and partially funded as part of a profit share scheme operated by WEBMART® Ltd, has today pledged £54,900 to carefully screened and selected good causes. This is in addition to 2008 donations of £22,280 and the WEBMART® donation to The Printers Charitable Trust of £5,000.
The WCT was inundated with applications from a number of good causes, all of which were worthy of funding, however a scoring
system for selection was used to grade the relevance to the objects.
The UK based organisations to benefit are; - ORBS in Nottingham (for the development of further research into breast cancer/reconstructive surgery)
-
PACE in Aylesbury (children with sensory and motor disorders)
- RNIB in Coventry (towards a new school and equipment for young children)
- The Jericho Foundation in Birmingham (vocational print and promotion training for socially disadvantaged young people)
- BTCV Thames & Chilterns (Conservation pioneering as Bicester Green Pioneers for 16-26 year olds)
- The National Star College based near Cheltenham (to sponsor a bedroom for young people aged 16-25 from all over the UK with a physical disability, acquired brain injury, and associated learning, sensory, medical, emotional and behavioural difficulties)
The overseas based organisations to benefit are; -
InterCare based in Leicester (Medical Aid for Africa utilising returned prescription medicines)
- Alchemy World (funding for 2009 for the WEBMART® Business School in Ethiopia)
-
Building a Future - administered in Peru (for the provision of equipment, facilities and funds for programmes education activities to those in need)
Geraldine Lay, one of three Trustees and committee member for The WCT said "the selection process was both heart wrenching as well as rewarding. Applications were received from a diverse array of potential beneficiaries all of whom represented very worthwhile causes, however the committee selected recipients based on a mixture of UK and overseas based projects. All recipients had to demonstrate a sustainable use for the donation with a reasonable mix of recipient gender, age, social background and location.”
Simon Biltcliffe, managing director of WEBMART® added: “We’re all chuffed to bits to be helping such top notch causes. Part of our
ethical beliefs at WEBMART® is that doing well for yourself is only meaningful if it's not to the detriment of others, and these
donations are a large part of putting that into practice”
