Week 6: Discovery Education Streaming Intro

In this week 's challenge we are looking at a tool that is really not a Web2.0 tool.  Web 2.0 is defined as free online applications used for creating, collaborating and communicating.  This week we are taking a quick look at Discovery Education Streaming.  The Mount Vernon School District subscribes to this media rich resource. Many of you remember Discovery Education Streaming as United Streaming an online resource for educational videos.  The video library continues to grow and includes great titles such as the Planet Earth series, the When We Left Earth series, the Human Body series and Bill Nye's Series Stuff Happens. But Discovery Educational Streaming has even more to offer with an Assignment Builder, a Quiz Builder and a Writing Prompt Creator.  In addition to these tools that students can access from any computer, there is a "This Day in History" calendar with activities and media to share about each calendar day and an Atlas with great video and lesson plan resources.

Challenge:

For this week's challenge, I created an assignment using the assignment builder and a very quick online quiz for you to take to complete  the challenge using the Quiz builder.

  • Take a few minutes to go into the assignment.  Look at some of the different types of media and take the very short quiz.
  • When you click on the link there will be a student code.  Provide your name and you will be directed to the assignment.
  • Take a look at samples of the different kinds of media offered.
  • On the assignment, you will find another link to the quiz.  (Ridiculously easy).  You will use the same process for getting to the quiz. Just provide your name.
  • Your visit to the assignment will be recorded and that will be your entry into this week's challenge.
  • On October 22 I will draw a name from the list of people who have gone to the assignment.  One lucky winner will receive a flash drive!

In addition to great online resources, Discovery Education also has a great network for teachers called Discovery Educators Network.  By joining the network, you will have access to great blogs, teacher resources and amazing professional development opportunities.  You can learn more about Discovery Educator Network and using media and web 2.0 tools in your classroom by joining us for the Discovery Educator's Network Virtual Conference Local Event on Saturday, October 25 at the District Office.  Find out more and sign up for this great day of Discovery here

I hope that you will want to explore this great resource further.  If you have not registered for Discovery Education Streaming yet, you can get your passcode from your building's library media specialist or by e-mailing me to request the codes for your building. I encourage you to explore this resource even if you do not have a set up for showing videos in class.  There are many great resources available that you can use even if projecting videos is not an option at this time.
