2009 Student Workshop: Wildlife Disease Career Building Topics
This workshop will focus on career building topics including Tips in Writing a Winning Grant, Creating Powerful Powerpoint Presentations, and Landing a Career in the Field of Wildlife Disease.
This is a no cost workshop for WDA registered students. Instruction by Flo Tseng (Tufts University Cummings SVM), Colin Gillin (Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife), Mark Drew (Idaho Fish & Game Department), and Dave Jessup (California Fish & Game)

HOT TOPICS IN MARINE MAMMALS -
Spend a half day refreshing your marine mammal resume.
This workshop will include both a classroom and a wet lab portion.
Lecture will provide updates on field necropsy and sample collection techniques for hot button issues such as navy sonar, the bends, and gunshot, emerging contaminants, algal blooms and emerging infectious diseases. Additional topics will include handling dead whales, field euthanasia and carcass disposal and a review of the Marine Mammal Stranding Network – what it is, how it works, and how you can get involved.
The wetlab portion will be a review of marine mammal necropsy and sampling techniques. Both pinniped and cetacean species will be covered.

FIELD INVESTIGATION OF WILDLIFE MORTALITY
How do you get the best samples from carcasses to maximize the return on your effort? Preparation! Learn what tools and techniques to have at the ready when you go into the field. Lecture will provide information on collecting a history, photo-documentation, sampling considerations, and systematic approaches for performing a necropsy. Wet lab portion will have terrestrial and avian carcasses for demonstration of external and internal exams and correct sample collection for a variety of potential agents.

What role the wildlife agency personnel, researchers, and animal care staff play during a spill? Well, wonder no more! Learn the roles & responsibilities of all the players, information on the effects of oil on wildlife, and cutting-edge animal care and post-release follow-up techniques for birds and mammals that have evolved since the Exxon Valdez spill 20 years ago.
