My Research

My research interests focus on hazards, development, disasters, and conflict.  The aim of my work is to reduce community vulnerability to hazards and conflict and improve disaster response. While serving in Afghanistan with the 12th Aviation Brigade, I had the opportunity to deploy to Pakistan and participate in the disaster response mission for the October 2005 Kashmir earthquake.

This is a home in Balakot that "pancaked" during the earthquake.  Many soft-story construction homes suffered the same fate.  Image by  W. Thompson

The basis of my research is the 2005 Kashmir earthquake. Dr Robert Yeats' website has good information on the event.

Laura Naranjo wrote a nice piece on the Kashmir earthquake.  You can access it here or download it below (listed as NASA EO 08oct22.pdf)

David Stauth of the OSU News & Communication Services wrote a very nice article about some of my activities Kashmir.  You can access the article below (listed as OSU Doctoral Student...).

Check out the article by Laura Naranjo on the subject of using remotely sensed information to learn more about earthquakes.  Access the article here.
