The WCSO Auxiliary Communications Service is a team of volunteers that serve the emergency communications needs of the Whatcom County Sheriff's Office. The ACS mission is to assist the Whatcom County Sheriff, deputies and staff with communications both during disaster and emergency response. The scope of the ACS mission includes: Disaster Response- The Sheriff is the Director of Emergency Management for Whatcom County, which is part of Whatcom Unified Emergency Management (WUEM) along with the City of Bellingham. The ACS provides communications and technical volunteers to work both within Emergency Coordination Center and in the field. ACS members may also be considered for positions on the Type 4 Incident Management Team which serves the Unified Command. Incident Response- The Sheriff's Office is designing a rapid response communications vehicle which will be operated and maintained by ACS staff. This vehicle may be deployed in emergency law enforcement support roles as well as disaster response. The communications vehicle will be delivered in 2011. Technical Advisors- ACS volunteers make themselves available to consult with the Sheriff, Command Staff, and Unified Emergency Management Staff on matters of communications and related technical/computer systems for planning and implementation. The ACS is open to any citizen of Whatcom County, pending a criminal background check.
