So what is it about Sykes that keeps us returning year after year? Each of us who have experienced Sykes will respond to this in a different manner; however between us we have shared camaraderie, emotions, and an acme sense of accomplishment.

I was first invited on Sykes in May of 2005 with my old roommate Victor, his wife Cindy, and Sunny. We were completely unprepared; returning tired, hungry and defeated. So what made us decide to do Sykes again in 2006, then again in 2007, and now in 2008? Simply stated - this trip is worth every footstep, every breath, and every drop of sweat you will endure. There is a reason why we can't stop talking about it, a reason why we are all willing to do it all again, and ultimately because we want to share the 'Sykes experience' with you.

Sykes is not easy, yet it's not extremely difficult. You will have climbed 3000 feet, descended 2000 feet, trekked about 20 miles, and crossed 3 rivers(twice) once finished. You will have also pushed your personal boundaries and/or expectations, escaped daily routine, and hopefully take home that 'Sykes experience' that we all share.

I hope to have you on this year's trek.

-Wallace

Notes:

  • We are leaving no later then 8am, it's a 90 mile drive to the trailhead from Cupertino.
  • We will keep a 1mi/30min pace, which is very relaxed. We will not leave anyone behind.
  • If possible we're camping closer to the hot springs this year.
  • You can download the suggested backpacking checklist here. (Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet)
  • Please pack in / pack out (Pick up your own trash)

  • We'll be sure to have s'more supplies.
