Playmates Preschool and Child Development Centers and Wayne County Schools is proud to offer 21st Century Community Learning Center Programs to 19 sites in the county during the 2006-2007 academic and summer school years.  Sites are presently operating at 5 Playmates Child Care Sites (community sites), Cerdo Elementary, Kenova Elementary, C-K Middle School, Crum Elementary and Middle, Lavalette Elementary, Wayne Elementary, Dunlow Elementary, Fort Gay Elementary, Pritchard Elementary, Kellogg Elementary, Vinson Middle School, Buffalo Elementary and Middle.

The purpose of the 21st  Century Community Learning Center after school program is to provide a safe and nurturing environment for children in need of extra academic support.  Assistance such as homework help, tutoring, are provided to help children succeed academically.  In addition to academic assistance, enrichment activities such as recreation, music, art, computers, lego labs, 2nd Step education, counseling, science and other activities are provided, along with a nutritional snack.  Wayne County is in its first year of the grant.  We have reapplied  next year to receive five more years of grant funding to enhance our programs with the adding the high schools.  Parents are also a vital part of this program.  We provide several opportunites for family events.  During this time parents and children are provided a wholesome family meal and an opportunity to learn while having fun together. 

Learn and Serve Gardening Project

 

The afterschool programs are presently operating rotational learning centers in the areas of math and reading tutoring and enrichment, hands-on Science, Second Step Violence Prevention Curriculum taught by Community Education Counselor counselors, 4-H Programming, drug prevention activities, computer lab, structured physical education, and educational games are integrated into the lessons when possible. During out of school time the students participate in community field trips to places such as; Marathon Wild Life Reserve in Ashland, Huntington Museum of Arts, Highlands Museum, and Sparetime for physical activities, and swimning.
