Washington's Karate Dojo
Female empowerment through karate and self defense
"For every drop of sweat there is one less tear to cry!"
“ So many times do we think, it would never happen to me. Why not empower yourself to be prepared to protect yourself or a loved one, just in case? I sincerely believe that everyone should learn some form of self defense, it’s unfortunate but, you never know if you’ll ever have to use it. And it’s better to know it and never use it, than to need it and not know it.” ~Master Monique Washington
Where it all began...
Master Monique Washington 1976
Washington's Karate for GirlsA system of codified practices and traditions of training for defense. Karate is studied for various reasons including accountability, character, confidence, defense, discipline, esteem, fitness and respect. Karate classes will include terminology, exercise, kata (forms), kumite (sparring), competiton preparation and discipline to build character. As karate is a physical sport, charater building is more important and a student has to prove this through their interaction with others, respect for adults, an acceptable grade point average and believing in themselves. Karate is learned on a progressive cirriculm as belt ranks will be earned once specifc requirements and proper personality traites are attained for that level. Master Washington is currently accepting enrollment for an ALL GIRLS karate class in Howard County, Maryland. Why all girls?
Washington's Karate for Girls- Fall Session 2008 - Top row (l to r) Lizzy, Allison, Carly, Sensei, Rachel, Carolina, Imani and Toni. Bottom row (l to r) Rebecca, Taylor, Kira and Sakai.
Self Defense for WomenThe art of self –defense is 90% awareness and 10% physical response. One must be aware of their surroundings, knowledgeable to the possibilities and have the ability to adapt to various situations. The physical aspect is simple. Personal weapons, pressure points and techniques can be easily acquired when properly trained. Self-defense is a mindset. Once completing this course, one will think and feel more clearly while becoming more confident if put in an uncontrollable situation. Course Descriptions Self defense lecture- this was created to inform others about awareness tips to be used during their daily routine. This open forum welcomes dialogue from the audience and ends with a question and answer session.
One day self defense clinic- this clinic was designed for the “hands-on” learner. (lasts 1.5- 4 hours) In addition to the self-defense lecture, students will have the opportunity to learn basic self-defense techniques. Students will receive hands-on training as they have an option to practice the basic techniques.
Three day self defense course- if you want to learn more and are specific to detail, this course is for you. Students will have three days to learn, practice and contribute to various self-defense techniques. Each student will have the opportunity to practice defending themselves from different grabs, holds and uncontrollable scenarios. Each course lasts approximately 1-½ hours. Students will receive a certificate of completion after completing this course. The course does not have to be three consecutive days. Are you interested? Got a group in mind? What are people saying????
“Thanks again for participating in the conference. Great feedback from your session; everyone loved it!” Renee McDonald, Legislative Assistant for Congressman Jim Moran - Washington, D.C.
"The self defense course was not only educational, informative and practical, but also empowering. I was provided with safety tips and awareness strategies that I currently implement in my daily routine, which didn't require very many adjustments to my existing lifestyle. However, with this addition of tips and strategies came the added benefits of an increased sense of safety and security, which are remarkable. Additionally, the self defense moves that Master Washington teaches provide an added barrier of protection and security." Natosha
“The class was great and very informative. I would recommend it for everyone.” Cheryl
“I thought the class was very enlightening. I learned various self defense techniques that can be used on persons of all different sizes. The class size was small and the instructor was great, I look forward to the next session.” Takia“The self defense course was very informative. In this day and time of rising and unstable crime, it reminds us to be alert of what is going on around us. I find myself going over the techniques in my head from time to time, sort of as a refresher. Although, I pray I never have to utilize what was taught, I am grateful for your instruction. I believe that awareness is key to survival.” Maria
“Monique Washington is an awesome woman who not only has terrific commonsense-inspiring things to say, but projects a marvelous energy that just proclaims that she walks her walk and genuinely cares about others getting satisfaction from doing the same.” Ann Kirby, EnnCourage, Inc.
“Monique walks her talk with a self-possessed strength in leadership that builds confidence, inspires upbeat imitation, and musters us to meet new challenges. She provides useful skills in observing our surroundings and protecting ourselves that we can apply immediately.” Laura Mueller, Acupuncturist and Zero Balancer, Center for Embodied Consciousness
“If you haven't heard Monique talk, or even if you have, you won't want to miss her when she speaks. She pumps you up and leaves everyone feeling better about themselves. I heard her speak when she went to Howard County, and made sure I went again when she spoke in Anne Arundel County. She is definitely worth the trip, no matter where you are.” Sue Hager, Embroidery by Sue
“Monique always presents herself with a polished, smooth, and heart centered demeanor when she speaks. I have rarely ever seen her have notes to refer to, and shares her love of karate and self-defense with passion for all to take to heart for their own good.” Linda Penkala, CMT, President Corporate Pit Stop L.L.C., Optimum Health For Life L.L.C.
“Monique's talk about how we communicate was an eye opening experience for me. I saw myself in several of her examples and have changed the way I communicate especially in business. I recommend that if given the opportunity you go hear what Monique has to say.” Debby Barry, Feng Shui for the Soul
