Maryland WIC Now Welcomed

posted Feb 29, 2012 8:59 AM by Ward 8 Farmers Market

Ward 8 Farmers Market is pleased to announce that our farmers can now accept WIC Farmers Market vouchers from both Maryland and Washington DC. Thanks to our support from the Wholesome Wave Foundation, we will double the value of these vouchers.

Ward 8 Farmers Market has long been a leader in providing affordable, fresh food to Ward 8 residents.  In 2011, our market distributed over $20,000 worth of nutritious, locally grown produce to DC residents using food assistance vouchers. While we have always welcomed Marylanders, we were unable to accept their WIC or Senior vouchers. Now, thanks to an agreement between DC's Department of Health and the Maryland Department of Agriculture, we will be able to provide the same services to our neighbors across the border.

We look forward to seeing many new faces and introduce you to fresh food, Ward 8 style.

Our November 19th market was stupendous.  We did double the business of the best market we have had in the 13 years we have served Ward 8.  If you came late in the day, and didn't find what you wanted, we are sorry.  We'll be expanding in 2012.

For those of you who missed it, or want to see the coverage, some talented student journalists were on hand to record images and voices for the GW Hatchet

Ward 8 Farmers Market Will Double All Food Vouchers in 2011

posted Mar 31, 2011 9:16 AM by Ward 8 Farmers Market

Ward 8 Farmers Market has received a grant from Wholesome Wave Foundation to establish a Double Dollars program.  Customers using WIC Vouchers, Senior Vouchers or an EBT/SNAP card will receive double their value. For the needy in our community, virtually our entire market has been cut to half price.

Our market provides an array of fresh fruits and vegetables from Maryland, Pennsylvania and Virginia.  In addition, we offer products such as jams, bread, muffins, chemical-free meats, houseplants grown in DC soil, and many surprises throughout the season.

We are also proud to once again welcome UDC's Center for Nutrition, Diet, and Health, which provides expertise in healthy eating, recipes and free snacks made from market ingredients.

WIC recipients receive special farmers market vouchers.  They are available to families in DC who meet income requirements with children from pregnancy to the age of 5.  If you are a WIC recipient and have not received your farmers market vouchers, speak to your WIC office or call the WIC  hotline at 1-800-345-1WIC.

Senior Vouchers from the Farmers Market Nutrition Program are available to DC residents over the age of 60 who meet income requirements.  More information is available at
(202) 724-5644.

Ward 8 Farmers Market will begin operations for the year on Saturday June 4 from 9 am - 2 pm.  Our season continues every week through Thanksgiving.  Our new location is at THEARC, 1901 Mississippi Ave. SE.

The Awesome Foundation has said it, so it must be true.  Ward 8 Farmers Market has been named an Awesome project for January.  This comes complete with a $1000 grant and the generous support of graphic artist Carolyn Sewell, who will provide us with a new look to go along with our new location and new selection of food.
