Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) Change

posted Jul 26, 2008 12:18 AM by Zhenlan Wang   [ updated Sep 16, 2008 2:35 AM ]

Toyota Corolla (done in July 2008)
  1. Warm up the car by driving it to normal operating temperature (~15 min)
  2. Park the car on a flat surface and raise the front of it using a pair of jack stands.
  3. Unscrew the plug from the transmission oil pan with a wrench (10mm) (together with an extension if too tight). Wait most old ATF to drain out.
  4. Remove the oil pan bolts along the sides - start from the rear ones to allow the fluid to drain into the used oil container.
  5. Remove the oil pan, mark the position of any magnets, clean the pan with kitchen paper and replace the magnets back to the correct positions.
  6. Remove the old gasket fromt the oil pan and put a new one on it (guys at SCHUCKS said sealant was not necessary).
  7. The transmission filter is exposed after oil pan is removed. Remove the old filter and install a new one.
  8. Bolt the oil pan back together (apply bolt sealant on bolts before screwing them in). Don't be too tight! Screw back the plug after then.
  9. Remove the jack stands and lower the vehicle.
  10. Fill about 3q ATF from the hole where the transimission dipstick is with a tunnel.
  11. Start the engine and let it run for about 2 minutes. Then shift the transmission through each gear while the brake pedal is pressed.
  12. Change the transmission back to park and check the fluid level on dipstick with the engine still idling.
  13. Add more fluid until the level on the dipstick is 'Full' at the 'Cold' reading. (Note: you need to shift the transmission after every fluid adding. Otherwise, reading on dipstick is incorrect.)
  14. Drive the car to normal operating temperature and check the fluid level while the engine is idling.
  15. Add more fluid if the level on the dipstick is not 'Full' at the 'Hot' reading.
Materials
  • ATF DEXRON III (total used ~5oz to 4Qt)
  • ATF Filter: Fram FT1169A (~$20)
  • Pan gasket
  • Bolt sealant

Engine Oil Change

Toyota Corolla (done in July 2008)
  1. Park the car on a flat surface and elevate the front of it using a car jack and a pair of jack stands.
  2. Crawl under the car and unscrew the plug from the engine oil pan with a wrench. Wait old oil drains completely (to a used oil container) and then replace the plug.

  3. Locate the oil filter and remove it (with a oil filter wrench if necessary). Lubricate the edge of the new filter with a little new engine oil and screw it on by hand.
  4. Refill the engine oil from the hole at the top of the engine with a funnel. Check the oil with the dipstick for proper reading.
  5. Start the engine while leaving the car on jack stands and check for any leakage.
Materials
  • Engine Oil: SAE 5W-30 (total used ~2Qt 28oz)
  • Filter: FRAM PH4967
