Walk-it is an SI 682 student project at the University of Michigan School of Information.

#1: Project Focus

The Problem:

There exist barriers to walking such as lack of knowledge of the environment, conditions, where the cross walks are, where the paths actually go. This makes it easier for many people to just simply drive and forgo walking.

Project Scope:

We want to understand the barriers that prevent people from walking and create a way for people to share information about resources, amenities, and quality of path that will encourage or make it easier for people to walk.

Stakeholders:

At this point we have identified the follow types of walkers we hope to serve:
  • people who want to walk for sustainability reasons
  • people who want to walk but something stops them
  • people who don't have a car or have limited access to a car

Vision of Solution:

At this point we think our solution will do the following:
  • Enhance walking experience. Users could create, rate and recommend paths such as winter route, rain route, easiest path, historic path.  Perhaps the ap could record the path as you
    walk it.
  • Show amenities such as public restrooms, crosswalks, overpasses, or lighted path.
  • Allow users to report current conditions such as the sidewalk closed here for construction.
