Interested In Guided Walks In The Fethiye Area?
In the area
surrounding Fethiye, Ovacik, Hisaronu and Oludeniz there's a wealth of
historical, cultural and just plain beautiful sites that most visitors
to Turkey never get to see. You're no doubt familiar with the tour
companies that offer Jeep, Quad-Bike and Truck Safaris, trips to
Butterfly Valley (where very few tourists get even a glimpse of a
butterfly), mud-baths and carpet factories, 12 island cruises,
para-sailing, para-gliding and microlighting etc.
For the more
discerning visitor to the historical home of the former Lycian Empire
there are a number of guided walks with varying degrees of difficulty
available.
Many tourists visit
the "Ghost Village" at Kaya Koyu, also formerly known as Levissi and
Karmylassos but very few take the time to wander around the deserted
streets within the village, visit other interesting sites in the valley
including the 3 Roman sarcophagi dating from the 4th century BC, the
ruins at Af Kule Monastery or indeed venture as far as Gemiler Island,
also known as St. Nicholas' Island and spend time exploring the many
ruins there.
In the area
surrounding Fethiye there are still several sites dating back to the
Knights of St. John and the Knights of Rhodes. Indeed Fethiye is
overlooked by the ruins of a magnificent castle formerly occupied by
the knights and now proudly displaying the Turkish flag and an
illuminated outline of Turkey's greatest statesman, Mustapha Kemal
Ataturk, the "father" of modern-day Turkey.
I've lived in the
area for over 5 years now and I've spent a large amount of time
exploring on foot, 2 wheels and 4 wheels. I've become friends with a
number of local people who have shared information with me about a
number of paths and tracks known only to local shepherds and goatherds.
Most of them are unrecorded and invisible on GoogleEarth etc.
I can also help with
arrangements for trips to historical sites that require transport to
outlying villages such as Kabak, Seki, Elmali, Girlev Lake, Patara
Beach, Uzumlu and Cadianda.
