Good News but...

The good news is that officials at the DC Department of Transportation (DDOT) tell me that the existing regulations are being revised, and that the Department has looked at what other cities are doing, including New York City.

What we don't have as yet, despite a problem that's been evident for a very long time, is

  •  A timeline for the implementation of new regulations.
  • The nature of these new regulations, including their underlying principles; i.e. whose interests and safety of pedestrians will truly matter or, or what is now the case, the convenience of  the builder.
  • Enforcement plans.

Anyone I've talked to about this issue, including Council member Graham, before whose committee I testified earlier this year, doesn't need convincing that how DC treats its pedestrians at constructions sites badly needs to be fixed, and soon. However, more evidence from around the city in the form of photographs and your experiences will help to move this along.  Photos of the disabled trying to deal with "go-away" signs would be especially apt, I think.  Please send them to me using the link at the right.  And do include photo credit, where and when the photo (s) was taken, and a line giving permission to post. Please contribute.  Thanks.

The Council Committee on Public Works and the Environment will hold oversight hearings on DDOT early in 2008.  Contact Mr. Kass (right) later this year for specifics.
