Most days in silence she slips within

to question if past acts of child abuse

can ever leave one unscathed

in a world that loves make believe

and punishes children telling tales.

In the jungle gym of her mind,

she yearns for that hour of liberation.

For words are her wings, as flying is for birds

To rise, writing down, all she needed said

about the author

Lili Tuwai was born in New Zealand into a mixed cultural heritage of Fijian, Tongan and European ancestry. She grew up as the youngest child in an often volatile and abusive home environment. As a shy and troubled teenager she discovered poetry and creative writing was a meaningful medium for expressing herself. In 1979, Lili became a teenage mother when her daughter Danielle was born. Together six years later, they migrated to Sydney, Australia. Lili worked in hospitality and various community and mainstream media whilst undertaking her two degrees: a BA in Communications with a double major in Radio Production & Social and Political Theory, and a BA (Hon) in Communications with first class honours. Over the years Lili has ventured into radio and print journalism, broadcasting, community work, events management, cultural activism, worked as a playwright, tackled technical writing, speech writing and worked as a researcher and academic. Lili attained her PhD in Philosophy/Cultural Studies in 2001. 'the heArt of my reVersing,' a redemption song in poems and stories is this author's much awaited first book.
