The Ghost Writer

Movie Plot

What can encourage a writer to work on the verge of his capacity? Is it talent, passion, complacency, or dissatisfaction; maybe, lots of money, curiosity, or fear to be killed? When a successful ghost writer starts his work on completion the memoirs of former British Prime Minister Adam Lang, bought by idea of great money and opportunity to get new experience, he comes to realize that new enterprise begins not quite right.

A previous writer Mike McAra died accidentally or committed suicide or perhaps, he was killed by the book. A new scandal and investigation, involving Adam Lang as indicted of authorizing the illegal seizure of suspected terrorists and passing them for torture by the CIA, are launched. Nevertheless, the ghost takes a plane and flies to Martha’s Vineyard, MA to work on the memoirs.
Lang, along with his wife, Ruth, personal assistant, Amelia, security guards, and other aids is staying in coastal house during his US lecture tour. The ghost joints them in winter period with wild ocean, gray color of the land as well as the sky. Lackluster landscape contrasts with furious protesters and numerous reporters, who are sniffing out avowal of crime. The mystery of McAra death haunts the ghost, because Mike was an author of manuscript and his decease is uncertain. Working in such oppressive conditions the ghost discovers facts tracing Lang’s interaction with CIA and explaining not accidental death or suicide, but murder of Mike McAra. In fear of own live, the ghost investigates predecessor's contacts that were in charge. When he arranges facts in order, and riddle is almost solved, a sudden event turns espionage paranoia off.

The memoir is published. The ghost has calmed till launch party of the book where he becomes aware of the truth about Ruth Lang. This knowledge rules him directly to his death, which is played up artistically. A moody color palette creates the atmosphere of inevitable and expectable outcome of the ghost's fate, meanwhile exquisite music procrastinate that moment and involve spectacular in playful and curious chain of facts, events, characters. The Ghost Writer remind me The Ninth Gate, where Dean Corso regardless of doomy inception of his assignment follows his aim - authenticate copy of the Aristide Torchia's book The Nine Gates of the Kingdom of Shadows, determine its authorship and buy the other two copies. The characters are similar: they're hired, and they cannot drop commitment out because of interest, passion, and fascinating mystery of circumstances.
