Possibilities are endless. Work hard and reap the rewards. Your student can pass Math and also raise her/his FCAT scores.
Need to get in touch with me? You can reach me at virginia.alexander@polk-fl.net and through the Winter Haven High School website, click on Faculty and I'm the first name under the Math heading. Also you can go to www.schoolnotes.com and send email through that website. I enjoy hearing from all of you so we let's work together and make the most of your student's math experience and make her or him a success in Math.

This course was new to our area a few years ago. We have had success through the years with it so we are using it again this year. The lessons are broken down into small skill sets which show the student what the skill looks like in Math Terms ( numbers and symbols) and how they can express what they see in Words. Students see the connection between the two and learn how to read better, comprehend vocabulary better, write and compute Math problems. With a broader understanding of Math, using this context, the students can only improve their grades and their ability to perform better on the FCAT. It takes commitment and a strong writing hand but the possibilites are endless and rewards great. Your student can overcome her/his deficits in Math and finally have some enjoyment and success. Rarely is there heard the proverbial, "I'm just not good at Math." any more. There are now smiling faces and other outward signs of finally "getting it" through their everyday accomplishments. Your son or daughter is very important to me and to our school. We want your child to be a success and to pass her/his courses and to graduate. It is so important because students must pass 4 Math courses to graduate. It is very important that they understand the foundation of their math which is the class they are in now, Algebra 1. Tutoring is held every afternoon from 1:45 - 3:00 p.m, rain or shine but might be starting later with some meetings that I have to attend. Also this year all teachers at WHHS are required to attend meetings every Tuesday and so there will be no tutoring on that day. All students will be reminded of the days of tutoring, when it will start and end and be assured that attendance is taken so that you will know whether your child attended. Calls and emails are greatly appreciated and are one way we can assure the success of your student. The first part of this website has been created for the students and parents of those taking Intensive Math and Algebra 1. The Learning to Learn course is for them. We will, however, also use other books and other sources throughtout the year but the main agenda using the Learning to Learn curriculum. My other students in Algebra 1 will have their studies featured after the Learning to Learn curriculum. I will include it on the list below of pages in the site. There will be from time to time more of the Algebra 1 curriculum added on as we get ready to master the skills and move throughout the book. Parents will find a list of what their student is working on now and should have mastered. All students are allowed to retake tests and quizzes and have the new grades put on the computer. All students will be given homework which will be graded but if turned in after the assigned time, they will receive a reduced grade. All students are given the opportunity to ask for help and help will be given. All the students receive one-on-one help as needed and as time and circumstances allow. If a student needs help and I cannot get to them during class, please have your student see me any other time and I will help her/him. If you student has Learning Strategies, he or she is allowed to come to my class and get help and sit through another class in hopes that this will help them understand or get more one-on-one help. Grades are also dependent on a notebook grade every interim and a participation grade. Notebooks grades are based on copying all information from the board and having completed all classwork. If your student has a D or F, I will contact you to see what we all can do to get your student back on track. Again, success is our goal. An I-Contract will be given to your students during the first 3 terms if he or she has a D or F at the end of the term. In my class this means that your student will have many pages of work to complete and then a test that he/she will have to pass with a 75/C or better. If all of that occurs, then her or his grade will be changed to a C. There is no I-Contract for the last term of the year. |

Continue on to see all the skill sets and masterys that your child will be working on this semester. You can help your child by paralleling the skill sets with other websites that correspond with these, and getting extra practice on the Math sites in the linkage area on the left, above.
