This page is a summary of the "Just Enough Math" concept. You can learn more by going to JustEnoughMath.com From the introduction to Just Enough Math I’m a lazy guy. That’s what makes me the perfect person to introduce the concept of “Just Enough.” Don’t buy my house: nearly everything I have repaired in the house is “good enough.” There are chipped areas on some walls, doors, baseboards that I painted with the same paint, even though baseboards should have a gloss enamel and walls should have a latex paint. Well, in most cases, I have the right quality, but the color is slightly different in different parts of the house – but I used the same color for touchup. It was “good enough.”
I call myself “Boris Gudinuv” (good enough). And that’s how I approach “required subjects” like calculus, trigonometry, algebra Two, spelling, --- what is good enough to prepare the student for life? What will students need to know? Let’s spend the minimum amount of time to get just enough information into the brain, so then the magic of “passion in the classroom” can take over.
This short booklet could turn into a massive 200-page tome someday (or not). I’m fairly certain that you will get the idea of the book in the next thirty seconds because
When I turn this book into a lengthy publication with forty-five youtube videos (corresponding to the main points of the book), I’m fairly certain that only ten percent of the current audience looking at this page will read and consume the entirety of my efforts. So that’s why this is a book of fewer than forty pages. The original book placed on scribd.com is even shorter. The ‘just-in-time” print-on-demand publisher that I selected to share these ideas with you has a requirement: The book needs to be at least 48 pages thick. That number of pages is the minimum required to create a thick-enough spine so that a title can be printed on the spine.
My challenge is to capture the essence of the “Just Enough” philosophy or theme in the remainder of this page. What is the minimum amount of teaching that I need to do to prepare students for becoming their own teachers? The goal is not getting an “A” in geometry or an 800 in the Math section of the SAT college entrance exam. The goal is lifelong learning, which will lead to lifelong application of relevant new information.
Great articles and movies sit on shelves and in the archives of the Internet. Why should I steal time from you, the student, by showing you the abundant references to brain theory and learning theories (so that I can say I’m educated)? The less I write in this booklet, the more time you will have to discover more about Dennis Littky, Dan Pink, Lois Hetland, Howard Gardner, Roger Sperry, Michael Hart’s Project Gutenberg, and efforts like BuildingInternationalBridges.org, TheStudentistheClass.com, VeryCoolSites.com, ISawItOnYouTube.com, Daniel Webster Big Picture Academy, Frida Kahlo High School, hightechhigh.org, Dennis Yuzenas, VisualAndActive.com, other sites and books and MentorsOnVideo.org.
Here is the key question: What is the minimum amount of the “standard curriculum” that you need to absorb and demonstrate to be ready for your life? You can stop reading this booklet if you get the idea: “Hey, I need to continually check that I’m not studying something that REALLY makes sense for me and my future.” Balance that idea with “Will my current teacher make my life miserable and will I screw up future opportunities if I slack off and negotiate a smaller curriculum? Will important doors close because I didn’t get an “A” in calculus? What opportunities will open What is the opportunity cost of studying just enough math? What is the opportunity cost of studying too much math?”
There. That’s the essence of this booklet. The rest is commentary.
