Dear Mr. Obama, Here are some letters that my students wrote to you. I started by saying the following: I was a student in Switzerland in October 1973 when the oil embargo took place. For four Sundays, no leisure travel took place. People pulled together and reduced their use of fuel. They used gasoline only for essential purposes (fire, ambulance, police). Ten years later, I wanted to do something to prepare for the post-petroleum era. I purchased a used electric car and drove it for six months. It was wonderful to know that most of the energy that went into those batteries was not connected to petroleum. I urge you to call for more sacrifices, higher taxes on gasoline and oil products and use the money to develop alternatives to gasoline. We can do it.
