Overview This course is offered through the Continuing Educaiton department at Broward College. The purpose of this course is to share technologies and techniques that have worked in the ESOL classroom. Many teachers outside the ESOL environment need to know these ESOL techniques so that this course is really for EVERYONE who teaches a student who is not a native English speaker. ESOL techniques are good teaching techniques in general. You will learn more if you demonstrate something that you learned and if you work with other people in the class. Feel free to bring your own camera to class and record anything. Assumptions 1. We know that young students learn more from their peers than from adults. 2. Howard Garnder has pointed out that there are at least 8 ways of learning, so there must be at least 8 ways of teaching and testing (evaluating the learning). 3. Many students learn faster from computers adn websites (especially with self-checking quizzes) How can we use technology to make the classroom more desirable? Come ot the four sessions of Teacher Training with Steve McCrea Expectations 1. I'll show up on time. If you can't get into class on time, don't call, don't excuse yourself, just slide into class. Don't ask the teacher for the materials -- everything is online. 2. Grading is by EXHIBITION and PRESENTATIONS. You can also accumulate a portfolio of highlights form the course. Show me the portfolio and you'll get points. More points, higher grade. 3. Grading is by NARRATIVE in addition to a letter grade. 4. If you are absent, write an email describing what you learned from teh reading. that will be placed in your portofolio and will act as your notes from that class. 5. Your portfolio will be your notes form the lectures and your reactions to the lectures and readings. Come to class PREPARED TO SPEAK about the readings. It is not my job to summarize the readings. You are grownups. Read ahead and bring your opinions to class. 6. I will videotape myself and put the materials on Youtube. If you don't want to be in the video, it is your responsiblity to remain off camera. If you don't want your voice on camera, write your questions and pass them to me. If you want to be on camera, walk to the front of the room and participate there. | Very Important Links The Readings on VisualandActive.com Skype.com Learn about this software.
