 Welcome to Millom & Area

Welcome to the google link page to the Visit Millom website (currently being redeveloped).

".. Millom is a small distinctive, independent coastal town that provides a great base in the South Western Lakes from which to explore the surrounding area and the Lake District"

South Copeland is separated from the Furness peninsular by the Duddon Estuary and is bounded to the west by the Irish Sea.
The coastal and the fell environments that surround the town have a high visual impact being located adjacent to the Lake District National Park and the Duddon Estuary, the latter having international recognition for its significance as a wildlife habitat e.g. RSPB Reserve at Hodbarrow.
Millom acts as the service centre for the villages of Haverigg, Kirksanton, Silecroft, Whicham, Whitbeck, Bootle, The Green, The Hill, Thwaites, Waberthwaite, Ulpha and a scattered rural population including the Duddon and Whicham Valleys.

It was with the discovery and exploitation of the iron ore deposits at Hodbarrow that the town grew and prospered.
In 1855 Millom had a population of over 10,000 and the town was devastated when the mine closed in 1968.

Millom's most famous son is poet and author Norman Nicholson (1914 - 87), who lived his whole life at St. George's Terrace in the town centre. A stained glass window memorial has been placed in St. George's Church, where he worshipped.

Millom, a fair trade town, is situated on the southerly peninsula of Copeland and forms the Gateway to the Western Lake District in Cumbria. The town and area form a great place to base your holiday for superb beaches ( 2 Blue Flag Beaches), Mountain Scenery, Quiet Country, Mountain and Coastal Walks. Discover the Hidden Gems of the South West Lake District.

Only a short drive away are: Muncaster Castle, Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway, Coniston Water, Hawkshead, Beatrix Potters 'Hill Tops', Wordsworths favourite 'Duddon Valley', Windermere, Grasmere, Dove Cottage home of William Wordsworth, Ambleside, Hard Knott Pass, Wrynose Pass.

We also have some of the best scenery in the Lake District with unrestircted views of the Fells and Duddon Estuary. On a clear day you can see the Isle of Man."
