![]() In fifth grade you will create your own colony modeled after the original thirteen colonies in America. You will participate in re-enactments of famous Revolutionary War battles. After researching early explorers, you will write a research paper and decorate a pumpkin depicting the explorer of your choice. You will construct a mini parade float advertising one of the fifty states. You will read both novels of your choice as well as class novels, where you will participate in a class blog, making observations and formulating questions. You will direct, produce, and act in several Readers' Theater Productions. You will act as Reading Buddies for the first graders, modeling for them, proper reading strategies. You will conduct science experiments and perform demonstrations that reflect your understanding of the Scientific Method. You will write personal narratives, research reports, fractured fairy tales, news casts, and personal reflections. You will incorporate figurative language in your writing, such as idioms, similes, metaphors, alliteration, and onomatopoeias. You'll even learn a catchy song so you can spell the word, "onomatopoeia" and impress your friends. You will learn how to play "Fast Facts," "Study Sticks," "Salute," and "I Have, Who Has" in math. You will add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions. You will convert fractions to decimals and percents. You will solve riddles and puzzles, as you challenge yourself with more difficult concepts. You will have the opportunity to participate in both independent and group projects where you will stretch your thinking and apply your creative skills. You will go on field trips, taking the knowledge you've gained in the classroom, and applying it to real world situations. You will have the opportunity to run for Student Council and become an altar sever. It's a busy year...get ready! |
