The construction of virtual spaces inhabited by ‘living’ populations is a research of the domain of artificial intelligence, which has been, mainly since the last decade, attracting a growing number of artists. Stemming from an emerging cyber-pop culture, and inheriting form video-games and social networks, virtual worlds are a privileged medium for artistic expression. As more and more virtual worlds make their appearance on the internet, and each day these environments become more determinant in the contextualization of human communication, seem pertinent address this phenomenon as a cultural artefact, and its instruments, as favouring an aesthetic experience.
However, the use of these techniques and processes as a form of artistic expressions is a phenomenon still little understood. The analysis of this artistic genre and its productive context requires a systematic research.
