Virginie Dupont, Ph.D.

Dr. Virginie Dupont is a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico (USA). For the completion of her "Diplôme d'Ingénieur" at the "Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Mécanique et d'Aérotechnique" (ENSMA, National School in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering) in Poitiers, France, Dr. Dupont performed an internship in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Vermont, in Burlington VT. She studied for five months the nanoindentation of of thin films via multiscale simulations. Her advisor, Prof. Frederic Sansoz, then suggested that she applied for a graduate teaching assistant position in the department. After her graduation from ENSMA in September 2005, she started the Ph.D. program. For the next three years, she further studied the nanoindentation of nanocrystalline thin films using molecular statics and molecular dynamics. She defended in September 2008, with a dissertation entitled "Multiscale modeling of contact plasticity and nanoindentation in nanostructured FCC metals".

Dr. Dupont stayed for a few months in the Sansoz group after graduation, while consulting for a ceramic parts manufacturer. She started her position at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in September 2009 as a Postdoctoral Research Associate with Dr. Timothy Germann. Since then, she has been working on various research projects including the study of shocks in metals and the strain rate, temperature and grain size effects on the yield point of different metals. She is involved in the Los Alamos Postdoc Association (LAPA) as a Career Committee member, and as the President of the Association for the November 2010 to May 2011 term.

During her studies, Dr. Dupont was the recipient of a few awards, such as a "Los Alamos Certificate of Recognition" for her involvement in LAPA, the "Mechanical Engineering Graduate Award 2007" from the University of Vermont, the 3rd place for best presentation at the University of Vermont's Graduate Research Day, or the Pegasus award while at ENSMA for an international experience. In addition to her native language French, Dr. Dupont is also fluent in English and speaks Spanish and Russian.

During her spare time, Dr. Dupont enjoys flying. She started studying for her private pilot certificate in September 2010, soloed in November 2010 and received her private pilot license in April 2011. Dr. Dupont is also an experimented scuba diver. She became a NAUI open water diver in 2006 and an advanced scuba diver in 2007. Since then, she has taken several specialty courses, such as altitude diving or enriched air. She has dove the coast of Maine, the Indian Ocean, the cold Californian Pacific and beautiful Puerto Vallarta in addition to lake diving in Vermont, Utah and New Mexico. Dr. Dupont also enjoys baking, skiing, crocheting, cross-stitching and dancing swing and salsa.
