10 tips for drywall repair

10 tips you need to know before you do a drywall repair

Materials:

Drywall tape
Drywall knife
Utility knife
Drywall sander and sandpaper
Drywall-repair compound (a.k.a., drywall mud)

1.-Begin by using a utility knife to trim away any frayed edges or overhanging wallpaper. You may be able to push some of the raised edges back into the opening to conceal them. Make certain that no edges will result in raised surfaces on the finished repair.

2.-Once the frayed edges have been trimmed away, place a strip of drywall tape or drywall patch kit  across the damaged area , making certain that the tape lays flat. Use a drywall knife to help you tear a clean edge when tearing the tape.

3.-With the tape or patch in place, prepare your drywall compound for application. It may help to thin the compound slightly with a small amount of water to help ensure a smooth application.

4.-Apply the compound across the area holding your knife at approx. a 30 degree angle, spreading it thin and smoothing it as you go . Make certain that you apply enough compound to fill the void behind the tape, then work off the excess with the drywall knife

5.-Let the first application of drywall compound dry.

6.-Once the compound is dry, sand the surface smooth using a drywall sander or sanding block.

7.-After the surface has been sanded smooth, apply another layer of compound with a larger knife and spread it smoothly, removing any excess carefully.

8.-Allow the second coat to dry, and sand it as before.

9.-It may require two or three coats to complete the repair, depending on the size of the hole.

10.- Once the compound is dry, sand the surface smooth using a drywall sander or sanding block again specially in the edges.
