Who will create new Vintage Missions?

posted Dec 18, 2010 2:33 AM by Bob Vanderstok   [ updated Dec 18, 2010 2:37 AM ]

By now, our weekly event on the Syndicate server has become quite popular with many regular players.

So far, I have created a number of missions and hosted them mostly on Sundays only. To keep this event special, we need new missions on a regular basis (one a week would be ideal!) so players will not get bored having to patrol always the same area, bomb the same targets and so on. Because of real life issues (busy at work!), beta testing and because I would also like to keep flying(!) I find I don't have the time to keep up. I never intended to be the only one making missions for Vintage Missions, so please post your mission if you think it can be used as Vintage Mission. I know there a number of very good mission designers out there!

If you would like to create a Vintage Mission, please follow these guidelines as I think it's important that the look&feel and quality should be the same each week. I will also post a sample mission file under 'Resources'.

Please note: our design limits exceed the official RoF limits, because they will be used on the Syndicate server and we have tested with these numbers. Don't expect this to work on any server! (but they propably will :) )

How to count number of objects in your mission?
Open your *.mission in Word and make a replacement:
Name = "Vehicle entity" to XXX
Use "Replace All" function. Number of replacements (will be displayed in info window after operation is completed) - it is a count of vehicles entities. UNDO after that/don't save!

Same for Planes:
Name = "Plane entity"

Bloody April!

posted Oct 12, 2010 12:01 AM by Bob Vanderstok   [ updated Oct 12, 2010 11:22 PM ]

On Sunday, the 10th of October (yes: 10/10/10) the Syndicate server hosted the mission "Bloody April" to celebrate the release of two iconic aircraft in Rise of Flight with update 1.015: The Sopwith Pup and Sopwith Triplane. With over 50 players connected at the same time, the event was a total success. In fact, it may have been the first time that the fights resembled the real air battles so realistically. I'll let the video by MrWolf speak for itself.

Every Sunday: Vintage Missions on Syndicate server

posted Oct 2, 2010 1:24 AM by Bob Vanderstok   [ updated Oct 13, 2010 12:20 AM ]

After the initial success of hosting a "vintage mission" on the Syndicate dedicated server, we have decided to do this every sunday. We'll try to put up a post a day before the event on the official Rise of Flight forum, to inform you about the upcoming mission.
We see a great trend that people are now actually flying together more and more and the fights tend to occur much higher up which resembles historical events much morer. It's not because of the missions really, but because the mindset of the players is slowly changing, that makes the events quite special.

First Vintage Missions on Syndicate server

Last Sunday, 22 August, the first "Historical Mission Night" was held on the Syndicate server. This dedicated server operated by the Syndicate team (http://www.thesyndicate.tk/) can host up to 50 people and is ideally suited for realistic & historical online events.
The mission, Arras 1916 (see mission page), was run the whole day so both players in the US- and European timezone could enjoy the mission. This mission includes in-game briefings and objectives for several flights and is designed to run continuously. A lot of people joined and the event was considered a great success.

First Online Event A Success!

posted Jun 9, 2010 5:31 AM by Bob Vanderstok   [ updated Jun 12, 2010 8:57 AM ]

On Monday, the 7th of June, 2010 our first event was held. Running on an ordinary quad core PC, we could easily host up to 12 people (RoF version 1.012). The gameplay was quite smooth and there was no lag to speak of. However, half of the people did experience the dreaded "rof.exe" error every now and then and this means we have to tune the missions some more.
Gameplay was very enjoyable with people actually teaming up, patrolling up and down the lines and interecepting two-seaters at altitude. Comms such as Teamspeak/Ventrilo were sorely missed though and a lot of typing had to be done in the chatbar to make team-mates aware of bogeys! This is definitely something we can improve. A couple of screenshots can be found in the gallery.

Feedback on this event was gathered in this thread on the riseofflight.com website:

All in all, the people that joined had a lot of fun and the "Vintage Missions" concept seems to be valid! Many thanks to everyone who could participate in the event.
