History of Village of Promise
The VOP Health Outreach Program began in 2003 with twelve concerned church members who outlined a broad vision to enhance health care delivery, specifically to minority groups.
Our initial program was to focus in an underserved community, the 92114 zip code area of San Diego County, with an emphasis on mental health needs, particularly depression. We recognized the need to build a coalition with area churches, governmental and civic organizations as a critical component of success for the Health Outreach Program. Once the coalition was in place, we implemented educational forums on depression, grief, and other mental health issues impacting adults and teens in the target area.
In April 2005, we received an 18-month grant of $50,000 from the California Endowment which enabled us to continue our educational programs while conducting depression screenings for 375 teens and adults.
After the 18-month project on depression was completed, the VOP leadership used the analysis of data and input from the community to initiate a second venture, The Village of Promise Collective Mentoring Project. O’Farrell Community Charter School partnered with VOP in this endeavor, and in 2009, the first group of students was received into the Project. | |
