When do I start?

They say it's never too early to start but Freshman Year (Grade Nine) seems to be the year that most websites suggest starting.  So if you are a Peewee Coach, I would suggest letting your parents know if they are interested in getting their athlete recruited, now's the time to get started.

Freshman Year (Grade Nine)
  • Start the discussions with your child.  Plant the seed
  • Emphasize doing well in school.  This will impact the scholarship amount
  • Parents should start doing their homework on the recruiting process (surf the net for information)
  • Work on improving the athlete's skills
    • Speed Clinics, Devils clinics, Pitching Clinics, Core Strength Clinics, etc.
  • Parents/players can start making contacts with coaches via emails and online questionnaires
    • Questionnaires are located on the school's websites (do as many as you can)
    • By filling out these forms and sending out emails, it will get your athlete on their team's mailing list (the start)
Sophomore Year (Grade Ten)
  • Plan should be in place to compete in 'Exposure' tournaments and combines
  • Although everyone may not be interested in a College Scholarship, these tournaments are fun for all
  • Parents/players should start making contacts with coaches via emails and online questionnaires (if you haven't done so yet)
    • Questionnaires are located on the school's websites (do as many as you can)
    • By filling out these forms and sending out emails, it will get your athlete on their team's mailing list (the start)
  • Attend college camps if financially feasible.  Another way to get on college's mailing list (radar)
  • Send them your Spring/Summer and Fall Schedule (yes, Fall schedule)
  • Most coaches will use the Fall season to check out potential recruits
  • If your team does not want to attend any Fall tournaments, I would suggest compromising and doing late Summer tournaments and/or attending any late Summer/Fall recruiting combines
  • Coaches will probably want to know your team's schedule so they can come out and watch
  • Keep working on improving the athlete's skills
Junior Year (Grade Eleven)
  • Attend more 'Exposure' tournaments and recruiting combines.
  • Continue the dialogue with coaches via email.(Important)
  • Send them your Spring/Summer and Fall Schedule
  • Plan on attending schools on 'unofficial' visits
  • Keep working on improving the athlete's skills
  • Plan/Schedule taking your SAT exam
  • During Junior year (and even earlier), athletes can receive scholarship offers and get asked to verbally commit to schools
  • Probably the last time to get noticed for higher level schools (DI and DII).  Would suggest making sure you go to some Fall Recruiting tournaments if you're wanting to go to these schools.  These schools allocate their money early.  If you're thinking JUCO, Division III or maybe even NAIA, you may be able to wait until your senior year to get noticed.
Senior Year (Grade Twelve)
  • In the Fall of their Senior Year, athletes can officially sign the National Letter of Intent to attend a school.  This is the result of accepting a scholarship from a school
  • After September 1st, schools can bring prospective student athletes to their schools on 'official' visits.  These visits are paid by the school
  • Athletes can accept up to five official visits and up to one visit per school
