Vermont Tours To Go
Historical Walking Tours of Burlington
|
My name is Patricia Araujo and I own Vermont Tours To Go. I research and record audio tours of historic sites around Vermont, but especially Burlington. These tours are currently available at several tourist attractions and stores. I have been working on a new tour CD, which will become available in the Spring of 2009, so stay tuned! I submitted a book proposal to write a book for a national publishing company about some wonderful piece of Burlington history, which is near and dear to my heart, so keep your eyes peeled! The publisher wants me to go forth and write it. (In fact, we are in the final contractual stage.) This book will also very likely be available in a store near you come 2009. It's all very exciting! I am a long-time resident of Vermont - over 31 years and counting and at least 28 of those years have been spent in Burlington! (It doesn't seem possible...) I have a Bachelor's degree from the University of Vermont in History. Even better though, is that I can recall the very first time I laid eyes on something historical. I was sitting in Social Studies in a third-grade class (and apparently not paying attention to the teacher), when I decided to flip ahead a few pages in the text book. In the lower right-hand corner, there was a full-color photo (mind you, in 1972 a full-color photograph in an elementary textbook was HUGE!) of Sumerian statuary. Vermont's history has been my hobby since my family moved here over 30 years ago! I decided to turn this hobby into a business in 2004 because I became disabled and was no longer able to continue the work I had been doing. Between my myriad interests and the unending support of VocRehab Vermont, I found my dream job. And I figured there MUST be other people who are as curious as I am about Burlington's history!! I always look for interesting tidbits and facts. So if anyone would like to correspond, please e-mail me. I love history and want to share the interesting, heart-warming, heart-breaking and frightening stories about the city I love! Hire me to lead you (or you and several of your best friends) around town. If you're a visitor, what a great way to spend a couple of hours (or longer. I can talk for hours: just ask any of my students!!). Should you be a local, I am certain I can tell you some tales that will intrigue you or perhaps make you think about Burlington in a whole different way. Do you ever wonder where street names actually get their names? Or wonder whose names adorn buildings and why? For instance, Lawrence Barnes is lucky enough to have his name on an elementary school in the Old North End. But who was this Mr. Barnes, who is pictured here? Gosh! So many streets and buildings, so many stories, so much history to share, so little time. Care to learn more? I've got so many tales to tell. Let me bend your ear. Don't forget to give the gift of history! Gift certificates are available for purchase! So don't wait. Give an intriguing and unexpected gift this year. Can't make time for a walking tour? Or only have a few minutes here and there? I have tour CD's available at a variety of stores. The tour CD is designed as a driving tour, but it could certainly be walked and I've known folks who've ridden bikes to take it as well! It wends its way around a little over 4 miles of Burlington, contains directions to each spot and is full of interesting anecdotes, architectural styles, descriptions of the buildings and other neat facts and is narrated by me. If you're interested, Apple Mountain, Borders, ECHO, the Peace and Justice Store and Shelburne Farms will be happy (giddy, tickled pink, ecstatic) to sell it to you. It is also available online, so please visit: www.bigheavyworld.com. I am certain that those folks would LOVE to sell you my tour CD, too! (By the way, I know there's a bunch gobbledy-gook in the right-hand column. I've been trying to fix that for some time now. It's supposed to be an advertisement link. Until I can make it look the way it's supposed to, please bear with me.) |
